How to set a friendly link in a public gallery?

Learn how to replace a standard URL with a personalized link containing your studio name, making it easier for Clients to access the gallery.

Written by Emilia Sowa

A friendly link is a personalized public gallery URL that replaces random characters with your studio name. This makes links look professional and easier for Clients to remember.

Key benefits and use cases

  • Brand building: Your name appears directly in the link (e.g. photodreams.mafelo.net).

  • Professionalism: Links look great in emails, SMS messages, and on social media.

  • Easy sharing: A short, readable link is less likely to be mistyped when copying or entering manually.

  • Quick identification: Clients immediately know they are reaching the right gallery.

How to set up a friendly link

Before you assign an individual name to a specific gallery, you must first set up your subdomain in the Mafelo system.

Step 1: Subdomain configuration

  1. Log in to the dashboard and go to the Settings section.

  2. Select the Your domain tab.

  3. In the Your subdomain field, enter your studio name (e.g. photo-dreams).

  4. Click Save.

⚠️Important: Changing the subdomain affects URLs throughout the entire system. The new name will replace the old one not only in friendly links for public galleries, but also in your booking system link. If you already have active links sent to Clients, they will stop working immediately after saving the changes.

Step 2: Setting the link and password for a public gallery

Once the subdomain is configured, you can assign a unique suffix to each public gallery.

  1. Create a gallery by clicking Create gallery, then select the Public gallery option (or go to edit an existing one).

  2. After uploading photos and filling in the details, click the Share gallery button in the top right corner.

  3. In the Friendly link section you will see a preview of the target address. You can edit it to match the gallery topic (e.g. school22)

  4. Set the access password. Below the link you will find a field to enter a password. This step is required – every public gallery must be protected. You set the password yourself (it can even be a single letter or digit).

  5. Copy the ready link and send it to your Clients together with the password you set.

📣Note: Friendly links work exclusively for Public galleries.

Best practices and troubleshooting

Below you will find tips on how to best use this feature, as well as solutions to the most common problems.

  • SEO support: It is worth using keywords related to your location or type of photography in the link (e.g. wedding-krakow-aniapiotr). This helps build brand recognition.

  • Legal responsibility: Avoid using trademarked names in links (e.g. cartoon characters, well-known brand names) unless you hold the appropriate license. The link is publicly visible and represents your business.

  • No special characters: Although modern browsers handle special characters, we recommend avoiding letters such as "ą, ś, ź" in links. Use "a, s, z" and hyphens instead of spaces to avoid errors when copying the link into SMS messages.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Can I change the friendly link after publishing the gallery?

Yes, you can edit the link suffix at any time. Keep in mind, however, that the old link will stop working. If Clients have already received a message with the link, you will need to send them the new address.

Why is my friendly link not working and I see an error?

The most common cause is a missing saved configuration in the Your domain tab. Even if you entered the studio name but did not click Save, the system will not generate the link correctly. Go back to Your domain Settings and make sure the subdomain field is filled in.

Will this link work on Instagram or Facebook?

Yes, friendly links are ideal for social media. They look professional and inspire more trust than system links. Keep in mind, however, that Facebook "remembers" (caches) the link preview image. If you change the main gallery photo after publishing the link on FB, refreshing the thumbnail may take a few hours.
