The Energy Card is a digital prepaid Mastercard. You can use it to pay your energy, water, or off-grid fuel bills online or by phone. It works for any UK supplier that takes Mastercard payments.
β
π‘ Why it matters
The Energy Card is one way the council, school, or charity supporting you can help with the cost of your bills. It works differently from a paper voucher. You don't take it to a shop. You use the card details to pay your supplier online or by phone. It works the same way as any other Mastercard.
The card holds a set amount of money. Once you spend it, the card stops working. You don't get a separate bill from the card.
β
π³ How it works
The Energy Card is a Mastercard in digital form. You don't get a physical card in the post.
When you open your link, your Energy Card appears on your screen. It shows a card number, an expiry date, and a CVV. The CVV is the three-digit security code on the back of a normal bank card.
You can use your Energy Card to pay:
Your gas or electricity supplier
Your water supplier
An off-grid fuel supplier (heating oil, LPG, or coal)
Your prepayment meter, if your supplier lets you top it up online
Your Energy Card is for utility bills only. It works online or by phone, not at a shop or till.
β
β What you can do
To claim your Energy Card, see How do I get my prepaid card?. To pay your supplier with it, see How do I use my prepaid card to pay my bill?.
Use your Energy Card before the end of the month shown on it. After that date, the card stops working and the money goes back to the organisation that sent it.
Some materials might call your Energy Card a "prepaid card". They're the same thing.
