How do I use my Water Card?

Pay your water supplier with your Water Card, online or by phone, even if your account is set up for direct debit.

Your Water Card is a digital prepaid Mastercard. You can use it to pay your water supplier online or by phone. It cannot be used in person.

If you haven't claimed your Water Card yet, see How do I get my prepaid energy card? first.

📋 Before you start

Before you start, you need two things from your water supplier:

  • Their name, which is at the top of your latest bill. Water companies are regional, so yours depends on where you live

  • Your customer reference number, which is also on your bill

💻 Paying online

Pay online on your water supplier's website. Look for their "Pay my bill" or "Make a payment" page.

  1. Choose Mastercard as the payment method

  2. Enter the card number, expiry date, and CVV shown on your card screen

The amount can't be more than your card balance, even by 1p, or the payment will be declined.

📞 Paying by phone

Pay by phone if you would rather not use the website. Call your water supplier's customer services number and ask to make a card payment.

Have your card number, expiry date, and CVV ready to read out.

💳 If you pay by direct debit

You can still use your Water Card if you pay your water bill by direct debit. Ask your supplier to take a one-off card payment on your account.

💡 When you pay, nobody will know

When you pay your water supplier with your Water Card, it works like any other Mastercard payment. Nobody there will know it came from a council, school, or charity.
