What can't I buy with my food or shopping voucher?

Things you can't purchase with welfare grocery or shopping vouchers - including alcohol, cigarettes, lottery tickets and fuel. Plus where to find the full exclusions for your specific brand.

Welfare grocery and shopping vouchers are intended for everyday essentials. Each supermarket or retailer sets its own exclusions, but the following items are commonly excluded across most brands:

  • Alcohol

  • Tobacco and cigarettes

  • Lottery tickets and scratch cards

  • Gift cards or vouchers sold within the store

  • Prescription medicines (varies by brand)

  • Fuel

  • Home delivery charges or service fees

Find the full terms for your brand

This help centre has a dedicated section - Section 7: Gift card and voucher T&Cs - with a separate article for every brand available on the platform. Each article covers the full terms and conditions for that brand, including a complete list of what can and can't be purchased.

To find yours, scroll down to Section 7 in the help centre and look for your supermarket or retailer.

Guidance from your sender

The organisation that sent your voucher - for example, your council, school, or charity - may have included guidance on how it should be used in the message that came with it. If you're unsure what your voucher is intended for, it's worth checking that message or contacting them directly.
