Xbox Game Crashing, Freezing, Lagging, & FPS Drops. Troubleshooting Frequent Crashes on Xbox Series X|S & Xbox One

Step-by-step guide to fix Xbox game crashes, and freezing issues by restarting your console, updating games, managing save data, and reinstalling titles.

If your game is crashing, freezing, or closing unexpectedly on Xbox, it’s often caused by temporary system issues, outdated game versions, or corrupted data. The steps below will walk you through the most common fixes to help restore stable performance.

1. Restart Your Xbox Console

A full restart is one of the most effective ways to clear temporary system errors and cache-related issues.

To restart your Xbox:

  • Disconnect any external accessories (controllers, drives, etc.)

  • Press and hold the power button on the console until it fully shuts down

  • Unplug the power cable for 2–5 minutes

  • Plug the console back in and turn it on

  • Launch the game again to test

This can often resolve crashes, freezes, or black screen issues.

2. Make Sure Your Game Is Fully Updated

Running an outdated version of a game can lead to instability or unexpected crashes.

To check updates:

  • Ensure your Xbox is connected to the internet

  • Go to My games & apps

  • Select the game and check for any available updates

  • If an update is available, install it before launching the game

You can also enable automatic updates via:
Settings > System > Updates

3. Clear or Reset Save Data (If Corruption Is Suspected)

In some cases, damaged local save data can cause repeated crashes.

To remove local save data:

  1. Go to your Games Library

  2. Highlight the game and press the Menu button (☰)

  3. Select Manage game and add-ons

  4. Go to your profile/save data section

  5. Choose Delete save data

  6. Select Delete from everywhere (if you want a full reset across devices)

⚠️ Important: This may permanently remove progress, settings, or customisations depending on cloud sync status.

4. Switch or Create a Different Xbox Profile

Occasionally, crashes may be linked to a specific user profile.

To test this:

  • Press the Xbox button on your controller

  • Go to Profile & System

  • Select Add or switch

  • Sign in with a different profile (or create a new one)

  • Launch the game again to see if the issue continues

If the game works on another profile, the issue may be profile-related.

5. Reinstall the Game

Reinstalling can fix corrupted installation files or missing data.

To reinstall:

  1. Open My games & apps

  2. Find the game and press the Menu button

  3. Select Uninstall and confirm

  4. Once removed, reinstall via:

    • Microsoft Store, or

    • Your Full Library, or

    • Xbox Game Pass (if included)

After reinstalling, launch the game and test performance.

6. Improve Overall Performance (Lag, FPS Drops, Glitches)

If your issue is more about performance than crashes, try:

  • Restarting your Xbox regularly

  • Checking cables and connections:

    Make sure to:

    • Check power cables and HDMI connections for wear or fraying

    • Ensure all cables are securely plugged in

    • Confirm your HDMI cable is properly connected to both the console and TV/monitor

    • Try reconnecting cables if you notice instability

Even small connection issues can contribute to lag or visual glitches.

  • Keeping your console clean and well-ventilated. Avoid enclosed spaces or tight shelving. Keep vents clear of obstruction.

  • Making sure there is enough storage space available.

  • Keeping games and system software fully updated.

  • Uninstalling unused games/apps to free up space.
