Updated over a month ago

If you're experiencing issues where the game gets stuck on the "Press A to Start" screen on Xbox, follow these troubleshooting steps to resolve the problem. These steps include resolving known issues like “ghost” controllers and other common fixes.

1. Check and Remove “Ghost” Controllers

Sometimes, your Xbox may register phantom controllers that can interfere with the game starting. Here's how to check for and remove these:

  1. Open the Xbox menu by pressing the Xbox button on your controller.

  2. Go to Settings > Devices & Connections > Accessories.

  3. Look for any grayed-out controllers or devices listed.

  4. Select these devices and remove them from the system.

  5. Restart your Xbox and try launching the game again.

Note: If the issue persists, you may need to repeat this step every time you turn your Xbox off and on.

2. Perform a Full Power Cycle

A full power cycle can clear temporary glitches that may prevent the game from starting.

  1. Turn off your Xbox by holding the power button on the console for 10 seconds.

  2. Unplug the power cable from the back of the console and wait for 30 seconds.

  3. Plug the power cable back in and turn the console on.

  4. Launch the game to see if the issue is resolved.

3. Reinstall the Game and Clear Reserved Space

Reinstalling the game and clearing reserved space can resolve issues related to corrupted files.

  1. Go to My Games & Apps > See All > Games.

  2. Highlight the game, press the menu button (three lines), and select Uninstall.

  3. After uninstalling, go to Settings > System > Storage, and delete any reserved space for the game.

  4. Reinstall the game from your library or the Xbox Store.

  5. Launch the game to check if the problem is fixed.

4. Play in Offline Mode

If the issue is caused by connectivity problems, try playing offline.

  1. Open the Xbox menu and go to Settings > General > Network Settings.

  2. Select Go Offline.

  3. Restart the console and try launching the game.

If this works, you can reconnect to the internet after starting the game.

5. Check for System and Game Updates

Ensure your console and game are fully updated.

  1. Go to Settings > System > Updates and check for any available system updates.

  2. Highlight the game in your library, press the menu button, and select Manage Game and Add-ons. Check for updates.

  3. Install any available updates and relaunch the game.

6. Reconnect the Controller

Issues with the controller connection may prevent the game from registering input.

  1. Disconnect and reconnect the controller by holding the sync button on the controller and console.

  2. If you’re using a wireless controller, try connecting it via a USB cable.

  3. Replace or recharge the controller batteries if necessary.

7. Rebuild the Xbox Cache

Clearing the cache can resolve various software issues.

  1. Turn off the Xbox and unplug the power cable from the back.

  2. Wait for 2-3 minutes to allow the cache to clear.

  3. Plug the cable back in and turn the console on.

  4. Launch the game to test if the issue is resolved.
