If you’re experiencing crashes, performance drops, or unstable gameplay on PlayStation, this is usually caused by temporary system issues, outdated software, or corrupted data. Follow the steps below to restore performance.
1. Restart Your PlayStation
A full restart clears temporary system issues and is often the fastest fix.
To restart:
Close any open games or apps
Hold the power button until the console shuts down
Unplug the console for 2–5 minutes
Plug it back in and restart
Launch the game again
2. Update Your Game & System Software
Outdated versions can cause crashes or performance problems.
To update your game:
Highlight the game on the home screen
Press the Options button
Select Check for Update
To update system software:
Go to Settings > System > System Software Update
Install any available updates
3. Free Up Storage Space
Low storage can impact performance and loading times.
To manage storage (PS5):
Go to Settings > Storage > Games and Apps
Select items you no longer need
Choose Delete
Keep enough free space to ensure smooth performance.
4. Clear Cache / Rebuild Database (Safe Mode)
This can fix deeper performance issues or corrupted system data.
To enter Safe Mode:
Turn off your console completely
Hold the power button until you hear two beeps
Connect your controller via USB
Press the PS button
Then:
Select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database
Choose Clear System Software Cache
Optionally select Rebuild Database
5. Reinstall the Game
If problems continue, reinstalling can fix corrupted files.
To reinstall:
Go to Settings > Storage
Delete the game
Re-download it from your library or store
Launch and test again
⚠️ Still Having Issues?
If your game is still crashing or performing poorly after trying these steps, it may be due to:
A temporary game-specific issue
System software needing a full update
Corrupted installation or save data
