If your game is crashing frequently, freezing, or failing to launch, several common causes can usually be resolved with a few simple steps. Work through the solutions below in order, as they move from quick checks to more advanced fixes.
Quick Checks First
Before diving into deeper troubleshooting, make sure to:
Confirm your PC meets at least the minimum system requirements for the game
Restart your computer and try launching the game again
Close other heavy applications running in the background
Update Your Steam Client
An outdated launcher can sometimes cause instability.
Open Steam
Click Steam in the top-left corner
Select Check for Steam Client Updates
Install any available updates and restart Steam
Disable or Remove Conflicting Software
Some background tools may interfere with game performance or cause crashes, including:
Razer Synapse
MSI Afterburner
Nahimic
Citrix
Armoury Crate
Try temporarily disabling or uninstalling them to see if the issue improves.
Check Antivirus and Firewall Settings
Security software can sometimes block game files unintentionally.
Add your game and Steam to your antivirus/firewall exceptions
Ensure Windows Defender is not restricting the game
Temporarily disable protection (only for testing) to check if it resolves the issue
Update Windows
Keeping Windows up to date helps fix bugs and improve system stability.
To update:
Open Start Menu
Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update
Click Check for updates
Install all available updates
Restart your PC
Update Your Graphics Drivers
Outdated GPU drivers are one of the most common causes of crashes.
Make sure your drivers are up to date using the official tools:
NVIDIA drivers: https://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx
AMD drivers: https://www.amd.com/en/support
Ensure You’re Using the Correct GPU
Some PCs have both integrated and dedicated graphics cards. If the game is running on the wrong one, it may crash or underperform.
Set your game to run on your dedicated GPU (NVIDIA or AMD)
Avoid using integrated graphics (e.g., Intel) if it doesn’t meet requirements
You can change this in your GPU control panel settings.
Verify Game Files (Steam)
Corrupted or missing files can cause crashes.
To verify:
Open Steam Library
Right-click your game
Select Properties
Go to Installed Files
Click Verify integrity of game files
Wait for the process to complete and relaunch the game
Perform a Clean Boot
A clean boot helps identify if background apps are causing issues.
This starts Windows with only essential services enabled. If your game works after this, another program is likely interfering.
Follow Microsoft’s guide for clean boot setup:
https://support.microsoft.com/windows/how-to-perform-a-clean-boot
Run a System File Check (SFC Scan)
This tool checks and repairs damaged Windows system files.
To run it:
Open the Start Menu
Type
cmdRight-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator
Enter:
sfc /scannowPress Enter and wait for the scan to finish
Restart your PC if issues are found
Run Steam and the Game as Administrator
Running with elevated permissions can resolve access-related crashes.
To do this:
Locate your Steam installation folder
Right-click Steam.exe > Properties > Compatibility
Tick Run this program as administrator
Then repeat similar steps for the game executable via Steam’s local files.
