If you’re experiencing crashes, freezing, or performance issues on Nintendo Switch, these problems are usually caused by temporary system errors, outdated software, or corrupted game data. The steps below will help you restore stable gameplay.
1. Restart Your Nintendo Switch
A full restart is one of the fastest ways to fix temporary system issues.
To perform a hard restart:
Press and hold the POWER button on the top of the console for about 20 seconds
Wait until the console fully powers off
Press the POWER button again to turn it back on
Launch the game and test
2. Update Your System and Games
Outdated software can cause crashes, glitches, or performance issues.
To update your system:
Go to System Settings > System > System Update
To update games:
Highlight the game on the HOME Menu
Press the + or Options button
Select Software Update
3. Check for Corrupted Data
Corrupted files can prevent games from launching or cause crashes.
To check:
Go to System Settings
Select Data Management
Choose Software
Select the game
Click Check for Corrupt Data
If issues are found:
Select Redownload and follow the instructions
4. Clear Your Nintendo Switch Cache
Clearing cache can remove temporary system data that may be causing issues.
To do this:

Select System
Open Formatting Options
Choose Clear Cache
Confirm when prompted
5. Reinstall the Game
If problems continue, reinstalling can fix missing or damaged files.
To reinstall:

Select the game
Choose Delete Software
Reinstall via:
Game card (physical copy), or
Nintendo eShop (digital copy)
