Post Office energy - what you need to know before sending

Pre-send checklist, KYB requirements, fees and key constraints for Post Office energy vouchers - including the 15-minute wait, the supported supplier list and how it differs from PayPoint.

When to use Post Office energy

Post Office energy vouchers are best for recipients who top up an energy meter and have a provider on the Post Office network. Vouchers are redeemed in store at any of around 11,500 Post Office branches.

The Post Office network covers a different list of energy providers from PayPoint, so it's worth checking both lists if you're not sure which one your recipient's provider is on. If your recipient pays a bill rather than topping up a meter, send an Energy Card instead. If you're not sure which is right, send OneLink Energy. See: Which energy voucher should I send? for a full comparison.

Before you start: KYB

Post Office is a regulated product. You'll need to pass a Know-Your-Business (KYB) check for Post Office before you can send Post Office vouchers. The same KYB covers both Post Office cash and Post Office energy.

If you haven't yet passed Post Office KYB, email us at disbursements@huggg.me to start the process. It typically takes 3-5 working days to process a KYB form.

Fees

There are extra fees associated with this product. For an up-to-date breakdown of issuance fees, cancellation fees and any other charges, email us at disbursements@huggg.me.

Pre-send checklist

Before you send a Post Office energy voucher, confirm:

  • Your organisation has passed Post Office KYB

  • Your recipient's energy provider is on the Post Office partner list (see below) - the list differs from PayPoint, so check this specifically

  • Your recipient has their gas card, electricity key or Smart Meter card available

  • Your recipient is able to redeem in store at a Post Office branch

  • Your recipient understands they must wait at least 15 minutes after generating the voucher before presenting it at the till

What to know

15-minute wait after claiming. Once your recipient generates the voucher on their phone, they must wait at least 15 minutes before presenting the barcode at the till. The voucher will not be processed correctly if used immediately. Make this clear to your recipient when sending.

In-store redemption only. The recipient must take their voucher to a Post Office branch with their gas card, electricity key or Smart Meter card.

Single use. The voucher can only be used once and will expire on the date shown.

Common issues and what to do

Issue

What to do

Provider isn't on the Post Office list

Send a PayPoint energy voucher (different provider list) or an Energy Card (if they pay online by card) instead.

Recipient doesn't have a Post Office branch nearby

Consider PayPoint energy (around 28,000 locations) or OneLink Energy.

Recipient doesn't have their gas card, electricity key or Smart Meter card

They will need to obtain a replacement from their energy provider before they can redeem.

Recipient presented the voucher within 15 minutes and it failed

They should wait the full 15 minutes from when the voucher was generated and try again at any Post Office branch.

How your recipient redeems

Recipients open their link, generate the voucher, wait 15 minutes, and present the barcode at any Post Office branch along with their gas card, electricity key or Smart Meter card. For full recipient instructions, see the recipient-side article: How do I use my Post Office energy voucher?
