Black Screen When Launching a Steam Game

Steam game black screen on startup, game launches but nothing appears, black screen after pressing Play

Updated over a week ago

Issue Overview

Some players may experience a black screen after launching a game through Steam. The game may appear to start normally, but the screen remains black or unresponsive.

This is a relatively common PC gaming issue and is usually related to graphics settings, drivers, or launch configuration rather than the game installation itself.

Possible Solutions

Please try the following steps, as they have helped many players resolve this issue:

1. Verify the Game Files

Corrupted or missing files can sometimes cause startup issues.

  1. Open Steam

  2. Go to the Library

  3. Right-click the game

  4. Select Properties → Installed Files

  5. Click Verify integrity of game files

Steam will check and repair any missing or corrupted files.

2. Update Your Graphics Drivers

Outdated GPU drivers are one of the most common causes of black screen issues.

  • Update your drivers from your graphics card manufacturer:

    • NVIDIA

    • AMD

    • Intel

After updating, restart your computer before launching the game again.

3. Launch the Game in Windowed Mode

Sometimes the game may fail to initialize correctly in full-screen mode.

You can try forcing windowed mode:

  1. Open Steam Library

  2. Right-click the game

  3. Select Properties

  4. Under Launch Options, enter:

-windowed

Then launch the game again.

4. Disable Overlays

Overlays from Steam, Discord, or other applications can occasionally interfere with game launches.

Try temporarily disabling:

  • Steam Overlay

  • Discord Overlay

  • GeForce Experience Overlay

Then restart the game.

5. Run the Game as Administrator

Some systems may require elevated permissions.

  1. Locate the game’s .exe file in the installation folder

  2. Right-click it

  3. Select Run as Administrator

6. Reinstall the Game

If the issue persists, reinstalling the game can help resolve problems caused by corrupted installation files.

  1. Open Steam

  2. Go to your Library

  3. Right-click the game and select Uninstall

  4. Restart Steam

  5. Reinstall the game from your Library

After reinstalling, try launching the game again.
