Organise campaigns with categories

Categories group campaigns so you can filter a long list. How to create one, why to agree the naming before you start, and the two things you cannot undo.

Once a property has more than twenty or thirty campaigns, finding the one you want becomes the challenging part. Categories are the answer: you label campaigns by purpose, then filter the list by that label.

They are worth setting up deliberately rather than as you go, for one reason. You cannot rename a category, you cannot delete one, and you cannot change a campaign's category once it is published. None of those are self-serve, so a scheme invented halfway through is a scheme you live with.

Creating a category

There is no settings screen for categories. You create one by naming it in the campaign itself, in either of two places. Both fields read Create or select a category, and both create the category if the name is new.

When you create the campaign. In the creation wizard, under Assign Categories, type the name you want.

Later, before publishing. Open the campaign, go to 4. Review & Publish, and use the Categories field in the Title & Categories section.

A campaign can carry more than one category, so a pre-arrival upsell can be filed under both.

Change it before you publish

A campaign's categories can be set and changed freely while it is unpublished. Once the campaign is published, its categories are fixed.

That makes the Review & Publish step the last chance, and it is worth adding to whatever you check before publishing. If a published campaign has ended up with the wrong category, contact support.

Filtering by category

Journeys. The board has a Categories filter above it. Tick the categories you want and choose Done. Each campaign card also shows its own categories on a Categories: line, under the trigger.

Broadcasts. The table has a Category column, so you can read them straight down the list, and the same Categories filter above it.

Both lists have a Reset button that clears every filter at once, which is quicker than unticking.

If a category you have just created is missing from the filter, use the Refresh at the top of the Categories dropdown. The filter holds its list of categories, and a category created a minute ago in another tab is not in it yet.

Naming them so they stay useful

Because you cannot rename or delete, the naming is the whole exercise. Two things help:

  • Name by purpose, not by date or campaign. "Confirmation" and "Post stay" stay true for years. "Summer 2026" and "New welcome flow v2" are stale by the following season, and you cannot tidy them away.

  • Keep the list short. A category is only useful if it groups several campaigns. If every campaign has its own, the filter tells you nothing that the title did not.

Agree the list with whoever else builds campaigns at your property before anyone starts assigning them. A handful of categories everyone uses the same way beats twenty that each mean something to one person.

Content blocks and audiences have their own

Campaigns are not the only thing you can categorise.

Content blocks are categorised with the same Create or select a category field in the block editor, and the block list has the same Categories filter.

Audiences carry categories too. They appear in the Categories column on the Audiences tab of the Marketing dashboard, which is a quick way to see how your segments are grouped. See The Marketing Dashboard.

Each of the three keeps its own separate set. A category created on a campaign does not appear when you are categorising a content block or an audience, and the reverse. Reusing the same names across them is fine, and often sensible, but you have to create them in each place.

What this does not do

  • No renaming. Neither renaming nor deleting a category is a self-serve action. Contact support if you need one changed.

  • No re-categorising a published campaign. Set them before you publish.

  • Categories do not affect sending. They are a label for you, not a setting. Nothing about who receives a campaign, or when, depends on its category.

  • Not shared between campaigns, content blocks and audiences. Three separate sets.

Getting help

Open Talk to Us in the left menu of the platform, or email support@bookboost.io. Tell us the category name and the campaigns it should apply to.
