How to connect my Generation 2 heater

Updated over a week ago

If you are experiencing the following issues with your Generation 2 units, this guide is for you:

• Generation 2 unit went offline and you’re unable to reconnect it.

Turn the heater off and on again and see if it reconnects automatically.

If it doesn’t, bring the heater closer to the router, turn it on again, and check if the connection is established.

• Unable to connect the Generation 2 unit after switching to a new router

Before connecting the unit to the app, make sure you are using the latest version of the Mill Norway app. If you’re using an iPhone, open the App Store and download the latest version. If you’re using an Android phone, open the Play Store and download the latest Mill Norway app.

Prerequisites before attempting to connect the heater:

  • Turn off the heater.

  • Press and hold the settings button while turning the heater back on.

  • This will reset the heater to factory settings, and it will default to 22°C.

If the Wi-Fi LED is still blinking or showing any light after waiting 30 seconds, press and hold the Wi-Fi button for 6–7 seconds, then release. This should turn off the light and reset the Wi-Fi.

We recommend creating a guest network on your router with the following settings:

Setting

Value

Network Type

2.4 GHz (not 5 GHz)

Mode

g, g/n (not AC/AX)

Channel

1 or 6 (preferably below 10)

Bandwidth

20/40 MHz (not Auto)

Security

WPA2 with AES encryption

DHCP

Must be enabled

WMM / APSD / Power Saving

Must be disabled

Airtime Fairness

Must be disabled

Smart Beam / VPN

Must be disabled

Firewall Port

8883 open

Network: 2.4 ghz (IPv4 is ok, IPv5/6/7 could cause problems)

Mode: G, G/N not AC or AX mode (ASUS router? Must have Legacy mode activated)

These settings can be found under your Wi-Fi settings on your router. After you have done the changes, connect your phone to your gest network as the heater will use the same network as your phone is connected to.

You are now ready to connect the heater. Follow the instructions in the app and make sure to select the correct product and generation. Before connecting, ensure your phone is connected to your 2.4 GHz network—otherwise, it won’t work.

If you’re unfamiliar with routers, you can contact your internet provider and they can help you set up the recommended settings.

Standard connection method:

Tap the + sign in the top right corner of the app’s start screen -> New device -> Select your product -> Choose the correct generation -> Follow the app instructions carefully.

Alternative Wi-Fi connection:

You can find the alternative Wi-Fi connection by going to Settings on the app’s main page -> Alternative Wi-Fi connection -> Select “post migration” -> Follow the app instructions carefully.

Note: Alternative Wi-Fi connection does not work for oil heaters.

Extra test method:

This method uses two phones. Phone 1 creates a hotspot using mobile data (4G/5G). It must not be connected to your router network. Phone 2 connects to this hotspot and attempts to add the device using the Mill Norway app. Follow the instructions for updating and then the standard connection process. If you reach the step where you assign a name to the device, the process was successful. You can then stop here, connect phone 2 to your main network, reset the device, and add it again in the app.

If you are still unable to add the device to your main network, you can try to “trick” it in. Use the same method, but change the hotspot’s SSID (network name) and password to match your main network. Turn off the router so this network is not available during the process. Complete the full setup by naming the device, assigning it to a home and room. Once you see the device in the app, turn off the hotspot and turn your router back on. The device will now have the necessary info to automatically connect to your main network.
