Power, water or heating outage

What to do in case of a power, water, or heating outage

Updated this week

If you experience a power, water, or heating interruption, it’s best to perform a few quick checks first. This helps you find out whether the issue is inside your home or part of a larger network problem.

Check the following

Power

  • Look outside to see if streetlights or your neighbours are also without power.

  • Check your fuse box: have any fuses or the residual current switch (RCD) tripped? Reset them if needed.

  • Unplug all electrical devices and plug them back in one by one (the so-called “plug test”) to see if a specific device is causing the problem.

Water

  • Make sure the main tap (stop valve) is fully open.

  • Ask your neighbours if they have water; this helps determine whether it’s a local or regional issue.

  • Visit waterstoring.nl to check if there’s a reported outage in your area.

Heating / Hot water

  • Check whether your thermostat is set correctly and whether the boiler or district heating unit is turned on.

  • In a collective heating system, the problem may be outside your home. Check this with your neighbours by stopping by or asking in the community via the LIV app.

Who to contact

  • Electricity and gas: Call the free National Outage Number 0800-9009 (available 24/7). Your report will be forwarded to the local network operator.

  • Water: Call your local water company’s emergency number, or report the issue via waterstoring.nl by entering your postcode and house number.

  • District heating / collective heating: Contact your heat supplier using the emergency number listed on your invoice or service guide.

In emergencies

  • Call 112 in case of immediate danger, such as fire, electrical short circuit, or major flooding.

  • Smell gas? Turn off the gas tap, ventilate the area, and call 0800-9009 immediately.
