How to optimize and send a Route to a Driver

Updated yesterday

After the orders for the route have been created, you can proceed with the finalization of the route.

It's possible to add or modify orders to the route at any time. However, you have to consider that the route optimization algorithm will be applied only to the addresses on a route that have the 'Unplanned' or 'Planned' status, namely, the address hasn't been started yet.

Optimization Settings

Set up route optimization preferences to ensure the most proper route planning and calculation as well as navigation preferences.

Click on the setting icon to manage route optimization settings. The settings window will open.

Add specific navigation parameters that should be avoided in route calculations.

Select the method of route calculation.

Enable historical and real-time traffic information.

  • Route’s start time is specified -> Traffic information will be considered based on the statistical data gathered by the third-party map provider for the particular times and weekdays;

  • Route’s start time is not specified -> The current traffic information of a present moment of time will be considered.

Enable truck restrictions. The route is planned considering the restrictions.

Each country’s specific rules are considered in accordance with the rules used by integrated third-party components that ensure navigation on the route.

Choose which countries should be avoided during the route. Several countries can be chosen.

After the settings are changed, they will be applied to further route planning and optimization.

Automated Route Optimization

When route optimization is run, all addresses on a route will be sequenced in the most efficient way for the preset vehicle and navigation parameters. Do the route optimization after the route addresses and orders are entered and route optimization parameters are set.

📘 If route optimization is done before the vehicle is assigned to the route, default restrictions and limitations for the passenger car (type of vehicle) are taken into account.

Click Optimize route to run automated route optimization.

🔔 A maximum of 200 addresses can be added within one route for a successful optimization.

For complicated routes with many addresses, optimization might take some time. It's possible to run the process in the background and to continue working with the platform while the route is being optimized.

After the optimization is completed, you will see the confirmation message.

After the route is optimized, the addresses in the list will become sequenced as optimized. The visual display of the route's path on the map will specify updated navigation between reordered route addresses. The total duration and distance of the route will be recalculated and displayed accordingly, too.

Automated route optimization can be performed as many times as needed for both the routes that are active and those that haven't been started yet. After the route is sent to the mobile app for the first time, it's automatically updated in the app immediately upon performing another route optimization attempt.

📘 Route optimization algorithm will be applied only to the addresses on a route that have the 'Planned' or 'Unplanned' status, namely, the address hasn't been started yet.

Manual Route Adjustments

In addition to the automated route optimization, manual route adjustments can be done. The most commonly used are mentioned below.

Change the Addresses Sequence

Change a sequence of addresses on a route. Use drag and drop to change the sequence.

📘 Manual reordering of addresses is active only until automated route optimization is run again. So it is recommended to perform address sequence changes after the route has been optimized and before it's sent to the mobile app.

Until the route optimization is run again, manual address positioning on a route will be saved as desired. When the next route optimization is run:

  • The addresses with the status 'Planned' or 'Unplanned' will be reordered on a route automatically to meet automated route optimization criteria;

  • The addresses with a status other than 'Planned' or 'Unplanned' will not be reordered and included in optimization since they are already being processed on a route.

Adjust the Exact Address Location

Adjust the exact location of an address, i.e. in cases when there are multiple gates in the warehouse building. Click on the address on the map and drop at the new chosen location. The address will be relocated and considered further for route planning.

Modify the Path

Modify the path between two addresses on a route, i.e., to avoid entering a specific city or district even if driving through an initially drawn path is not prohibited by road limits or restrictions.

Click on the desired part of the route and move the mouse cursor to draw the desired path. The suggested path will be displayed on a map in red.

When the desired path adjustment is reached, click in the desired area. Route’s path will be changed then and displayed accordingly on the map.

📘 Path modifications are active in the platform only until automated route optimization is run, so it's recommended to run such modifications after the route has been optimized and before it is sent to the mobile application.

Manually adjusted paths will be displayed for the driver only if the driver's device is equipped with Sygic Truck navigation under the Enterprise licence supplied with the Guided routes feature. This will ensure that the created path is displayed on the navigation app exactly as planned in the route planning solution. If drivers use other available navigation apps (e.g., Google Maps, Waze, etc.) the app will only supply the destination and the corresponding navigation app will calculate the path. Note that this doesn't affect the sequence of planned orders.

Send Route to the Driver app

Send the route to the mobile application when route planning and optimization are completed.

The send icon will become inactive .

The addresses will change status from 'Unplanned' to 'Planned'. All further modifications to a route will be sent to the mobile app immediately and the driver will receive a notification on his/her device that the route has been adjusted. Route addresses will be shown in the mobile app in the same sequence as managed in the platform.

Change the Status of an Address

The status of each address on a route has to be marked to ensure proper information exchange between the route planning platform components and correct navigation on the route. Commonly the user of the mobile app changes the status while performing the route. However, it is possible to change statuses also from the WEB platform in case there have been mistakes done or changes are necessary.

Click on the status of the address to make the necessary changes. Choose the necessary status and it will be automatically synchronized with the mobile application.

Most common reasons for changing statuses from the WEB platform:

  1. End client cancels the delivery - WEB platform user declines the order without the need to request this change from the driver and the status changes are displayed in the mobile app so the driver is notified about the current status.

  2. The driver has made a mistake by entering statuses - in case the driver has set the wrong status or has not changed the status at all, for example, of the last order to completed, WEB platform user can verify this and change the status accordingly.

  3. Pick-up orders are at the start location - if multiple pick-up orders are scheduled at the same location where the driver starts, WEB platform user can change the status to completed if the driver is not required to confirm that orders are loaded in the vehicle.

📘 The status can be changed only for already planned addresses.
