How URL configuration works in the Cookie Banner

Written by AdOpt Support
Updated over 5 months ago

When creating a Disclaimer in AdOpt, you can choose to configure it with a single URL or with multiple URLs.
This choice is strategic, as it defines the coverage of the scan performed by the Tag Scanner, the tool responsible for identifying all tags and active cookies on your site.

This configuration directly impacts the scope and accuracy of the banner displayed to your visitors.

💡 Tip: AdOpt only scans the URLs listed in the Banner. Be sure to include all pages that contain different tags to ensure complete and reliable mapping.

Why does this matter?

The GDPR establishes transparency as a fundamental principle in the processing of personal data (Art. 5, item 1, point a).

In the context of cookie usage, this means your company must:

  • Inform which cookies are being used;

  • Explain the purpose of each cookie or category;

  • Ensure users can access this information in a clear and unambiguous way.

Configuring URLs correctly ensures that:

  • The scan identifies all active cookies and tags;

  • The Cookie Policy is always generated or updated with precision;

  • Visitors have complete and transparent information about what is in use on the site;

  • Your business remains compliant with regulations such as GDPR, CCPA, and other privacy laws.

💡 Tip: In addition, by integrating the Document Generator with the Scheduled Scanner, AdOpt can automatically update your cookie policy whenever new scans are performed, reducing manual effort and minimizing the risk of outdated information.

URL limits per plan

Each AdOpt plan has a maximum number of URLs that can be scanned per banner:

  • Starter: 1 URL per banner

  • Business: 5 URLs per banner

  • Pro: 7 URLs per banner

  • Enterprise: 10 URLs per banner

If the number of required URLs exceeds this limit, you’ll need to adjust your strategy — either by splitting banners or reviewing which pages truly need to be included. If needed, you can also purchase a URL Add-On to cover your requirements.

When to use 1 URL or multiple URLs

The number of URLs depends on the structure and complexity of your site.

Example 1: Simple site

  • Single domain, no subdomains.

  • All pages use the same tags.

Recommendation: listing 1 URL is enough for a full scan.

Example 2: Site with tag variations

  • Same domain, but some pages use different tags.

  • Examples: homepage, cart page, contact page.

Recommendation: list each page with different tags to ensure all are correctly identified.

Key definitions

To avoid confusion, here are the terms used in this guide:

Analogy:

  • Domain: main building.

  • Subdomain: different stores inside the same mall.

  • URL: the full address of a specific store or apartment.

Best practices for configuration

  • List only the necessary pages
    You don’t need to include every URL on your site.
    Focus only on those that have distinct tags and require individual scans.

  • Separate banners by domain or subdomain
    Each domain or subdomain should have its own banner.

  • One banner across two or more environments (e.g., domain and subdomain)
    A single banner covering multiple sites.

  • Respect the plan’s banner limit

    • Starter: 1 banner

    • Business: 3 banners

    • Pro: 10 banners

    • Enterprise: 30 banners

By following these practices, your setup will stay organized and within your plan limits.

Domains and subdomains — special handling

When your company operates with multiple domains or subdomains, you can follow two approaches:

  1. Create separate banners for each domain or subdomain.

  2. Use the Cross-site consent feature, which shares consent across different sites, providing a smooth and unified user experience.

Quick summary

  • Simple site, no tag variation → 1 URL, 1 banner.

  • Site with pages using different tags → list only those pages.

  • Multiple domains or subdomains → create separate banners.

  • Multiple connected sites → use Cross-site consent.

Conclusion

By following these guidelines, you ensure that:

  • AdOpt’s scans are complete and reliable;

  • Your Cookie Policy is always up to date;

  • Your site delivers a safe, transparent experience while staying compliant with laws such as GDPR and CCPA.
