What happens if a Yonder member passes away?

Updated yesterday

We understand that losing a loved one is an incredibly difficult time. We are here to support you and make the process of managing their Yonder account as simple and clear as possible.

1. Letting us know what's happened

To begin, please email help@yonder.com. Once we receive your notification, we will immediately freeze the account and block the associated card to protect the security of the estate. Please provide the following information:

  • Full name of the account holder.

  • Date of birth.

  • Email address or phone number linked to the account.

  • IBAN of the Yonder account (if available).

2. Required Documentation

To finalise the account closure and any transfer of funds, we will need to verify the identity of the executor or heir (executeur of erfgenaam). We typically require:

  • Uittreksel uit de overlijdensakte: An official extract from the death certificate.

  • Verklaring van Erfrecht: For the release of funds, we may require a Certificate of Inheritance issued by a Dutch notary. This confirms who is legally authorised to manage the deceased’s affairs.

    • Note: For accounts with a very low balance, we may be able to offer a simplified process without a notary’s certificate.

3. Account Balance

Positive Balance: Once the legal documentation is verified, we will transfer any remaining funds to a designated bank account held by the heirs or the estate.

Negative Balance: If there is an outstanding balance, our support team will work with the executor. In the Netherlands, heirs have the option to accept an inheritance "beneficially" (beneficiair aanvaarden). This protects heirs from being personally liable for the deceased's debts if the estate’s liabilities exceed its assets.

4. Crowdfund Investors

If the member held an investment in Yonder through a crowdfunding platform (such as Seedrs/Republic), these shares are held externally. You will need to contact the platform's support team directly to manage the transfer of these holdings.

5. Other Services and Support

The following Dutch resources provide step-by-step guidance on administrative and emotional matters:

Emotional & Practical Support:

  • Humanitas: Provides volunteer support and "Steun bij Rouw" groups.
