Are Huel pouches biodegradable or compostable?

Confirms that Huel pouches are not biodegradable or compostable, explaining the design rationale and what Huel is exploring for the future.

Written by Jamie Forbes

No β€” Huel pouches are not biodegradable or compostable.

Why Not?

Huel pouches are made from multi-layer flexible materials specifically designed to:

Function

Detail

Protect the product

Keeps contents safe from moisture, light, and contamination

Maintain freshness

Preserves nutritional quality and flavour across a 12-month shelf life

Prevent food waste

Durable packaging reduces the risk of spoilage β€” which itself has a significant environmental impact

Biodegradable and compostable materials currently available do not reliably meet these protective requirements at scale.

What Huel Is Doing

Huel recognises that its pouches are not yet recyclable, biodegradable, or compostable β€” and is actively exploring new packaging materials and technologies that reduce environmental impact without compromising product quality or safety.

This is a key part of Huel's sustainability roadmap for 2025 and beyond.

The Bigger Picture

Switching to biodegradable packaging that leads to increased food waste would not necessarily be a better environmental outcome. Huel's approach is to find solutions that genuinely reduce overall impact β€” not just tick a packaging box.
