Important Questions About the 2025 Tax Return

Your Q&A for Submitting Your 2025 Tax Return Information

1. Why was my submission deadline already August 15, 2026, if the statutory deadline is not until March 1, 2027?

The statutory deadline for tax returns filed by tax advisors is March 1, 2027. To ensure that we can process your tax return carefully and submit it to the tax office on time, we needed to have your complete data by August 15, 2026.

2. What happens if I miss the August 15, 2026 deadline?

If you submit your data after August 15, 2026, we can no longer guarantee that your tax return will be submitted to the tax office on time. Depending on how much later you submit your data, we will of course continue to do our best to meet the statutory deadline. If we still have not received your data by September 30, 2026, a system activation fee of €99 plus VAT will be charged.

3. Can I still submit my data after August 15, 2026?

Yes. You can still submit any missing data and documents after the internal submission deadline has passed. However, we can no longer guarantee that your tax return will be submitted to the tax office on time.

4. My status says “Expired”. What should I do?

Please submit any missing data and documents as soon as possible via your smarta WebApp. To do so, click on “2025 Annual Financial Statements” and start or complete the questionnaires listed there. After the internal deadline has passed, we can no longer guarantee that your tax return will be submitted to the tax office on time.

5. My data is complete, but “Complete business accounting” still says “Not completed”. What should I do?

If your receipts and the December 2025 bank statement are already shown as complete, the system check may still be in progress. This process can take up to 24 hours. The status should then be updated automatically.

6. How can I tell whether my data has been submitted completely?

Once all required sections and documents have been completed, you can submit your data via the WebApp. After submission, we will review your data. The system check for “Business Accounting” can take up to 24 hours. The annual financial statements status will then change to “In progress”.

7. When will my tax return be processed?

We process tax returns in the order in which the data was submitted. If you require expedited processing by a specific date, please contact us at kontakt-team@smarta-steuern.de.

8. What happens after I approve the draft of my tax return?

Once you have approved the draft, we will electronically submit your tax return to your tax office.

9. What do I need to upload under “Bank Statements”?

At this point, please upload the December 2025 bank statement from all banks you were using with smarta at that time. We synchronize your bank data daily via an interface, but at the end of the year we want to cross-check that all transactions have been assigned to the correct period. Please note: We only need the December statement.

10. I can't complete the questionnaires.

Please check whether, on the final screen of the questionnaire, you are asked to provide receipts or documents for the information you entered. The questionnaire will also show the status “Missing receipts”. You must upload the required supporting documents.

If you do not have any receipts or documents for the information you provided, you can only complete the questionnaire by clicking “[insert special character] Do not submit” in the upload window and removing the respective entry.

We only request supporting documents where they are required by the tax office.
