Deadlines & Timelines

  • Why is my submission deadline already October 15, 2025, even though the legal deadline is April 30, 2026?
    We need your information by October 15, 2025, to ensure we have enough time for thorough review and any follow-up questions. Only then can we guarantee on-time submission to the tax office.

  • What happens if I miss the October 15, 2025 deadline?
    If submitted late, we can no longer guarantee timely filing. Late penalties, interest charges, or fines may apply.

  • Are there any exceptions or individual extensions?
    Unfortunately not. We cannot offer extensions. If submitted after the deadline, smarta is not liable for any penalties, interest, or fines imposed by the tax office.


Process & Review

  • When will smarta start working on my return – right after submission or only after October 15, 2025?
    We process all submissions in the order received. Typically, we begin a few weeks after receiving your complete documents. If you need faster processing, you can request our express service via: kontakt-team@smarta-steuern.de.

  • How long does processing usually take?
    That depends on when we receive your complete documents. The earlier you submit, the sooner we can begin.

  • What happens after I click "Submit"? Do I need to do anything else?
    After submission, we review your data and create a draft. You’ll receive this by email for your review. We only submit it to the tax office after your approval.

  • What happens after I approve my draft?
    We electronically transmit your tax return to the tax office.


Content & Data

  • Which information from last year is already pre-filled?
    Many recurring details, like personal information, are already pre-filled. You should check and update them as needed.

  • How do I know if my information is complete?
    Each questionnaire shows your progress. You can only click "Submit" once all sections are completed and documents uploaded.

  • What happens if I forget something?
    Our system notifies you of missing or incomplete data. Plus, you’ll get a draft to review before final submission to catch any gaps.

  • Is there a checklist of required documents?
    Yes – you can find an overview of the most important documents here.

  • Where can I find the “Tax Advisory” section in the web app?
    After logging in, you'll find the “Tax Advisory” section in the main menu. It contains all tasks related to your 2024 tax return.


Documents & Uploads

  • How can I upload my documents?
    Upload them directly via the smarta web app or email them to belege@smarta-steuern.de. Please use your registered email address so we can assign them correctly. More info here.

  • Which file formats are accepted?
    Accepted formats are PDF, PNG, JPG, and JPEG. Max file size: 10MB.


Technical Questions about the Web App

  • Does the web app work on tablets or smartphones?
    The smarta web app is optimized for desktop use. For best performance, we recommend using it on a computer.

  • What should I do if I have technical issues with login or uploads?
    For technical support, email us at: kontakt-team@smarta-steuern.de.

  • I forgot my login details – how do I regain access?
    No worries! Click “Forgot password” on the login page and follow the instructions to reset it via email.

Liability & Responsibility

  • What are the potential consequences of late submission (penalties, fines, etc.)?
    Missing the deadline can lead to financial and legal consequences:

    • Late filing penalties (§ 152 AO)

    • Estimated taxation (§ 162 AO)

    • Interest on tax payments (§ 233a AO)

    • Administrative or enforcement fines (§§ 328, 329 AO)

    • Criminal charges in cases of tax evasion (§ 370 AO)


Submission & Review

  • How and when will I receive my drafts for review?
    Once we’ve prepared your return, you'll get the draft via email. Be sure to also check your spam folder.

  • How much time do I have to review the draft before submission?
    Please review it as soon as possible. We won’t submit anything without your approval. The sooner you confirm, the faster we submit.

  • Can I make corrections after approving the draft?
    You can request changes before giving your approval. After approval, changes are only possible through a correction notice.
