Your bank connection with smarta – how it works
We enable you to securely and automatically import your bank transactions – from over 1,000 supported banks.
This way, your bookkeeping stays complete, up to date, and accurate at all times – without manually uploading bank statements.
In this article, you’ll learn which information we need to set up your bank connection and what to keep in mind when linking your bank account to your smarta profile.
Setting up your bank connection for the first time
To set up your bank connection, we need the following information from you:
What we need
The full name of your bank
Especially for savings banks (Sparkassen) and cooperative banks (Volks- & Raiffeisenbanken), it’s important to include the location (e.g., Kreissparkasse Bersenbrück or Raiffeisenbank Regensburg-Wenzenbach).Confirmation that this is a business account
We can only connect business accounts. Your private life and business finances should remain clearly separated – for clean and compliant bookkeeping.A bank statement from January 1st or from your business account opening date until today
This is used for verification and data matching. The desired start date for transaction import
Please let us know from which date you want us to import transactions into your bookkeeping. This date determines the starting point from which bank transactions will be included.
What happens next?
Once we’ve received your complete information:
We’ll check whether your bank can be connected.
If your bank is supported, we’ll set up the connection for you.
You’ll receive an email with a personal link to securely authorize your bank account.
This link will take you to your online banking platform, where you can grant access for the data import.
What happens after linking?
Your transactions will be automatically synchronized
The data is updated daily
Technical notes on data transmission
The authorization is valid for 90 to 180 days, depending on your bank.
After that, we’ll send you a new link to renew the connection – the process is the same as during the initial setup.
You’ll simply need to re-authorize access via your online banking, so we can continue retrieving your transactions.
Retroactive transaction import – how much data will be fetched?
On the connection screen, a timeframe of up to 730 days is often shown. This is the maximum period allowed by some banks.
However, we will only import transactions from the start date you agreed with us during setup.
In your smarta web app, you can see when the import began by checking the date of the first visible transaction.
