Banner: Can´t log in to smarta - what can you do?

If you’re unable to log in and see an error message, there may be several reasons for this. Here are some steps you can try:

1. Check your login details

  • Make sure you’re using the correct email address – the one linked to your smarta profile.

  • Double-check the spelling and capitalization of your password.

  • Ensure your keyboard layout hasn’t been switched (e.g. from German to English).

2. Reset your password (also for first-time login)

You can reset your password at any time – even if you’re logging in for the first time. Here’s how:

  1. Go to the login page: https://app.smarta.tax/login

  2. Enter your email address.

  3. Click on “Forgot password?”

  4. You’ll see a message saying a password reset email has been sent to you.

  5. Open your email inbox and click the link labeled “Reset password”.

  6. Set a new password and confirm it.

  7. A confirmation message will appear once your password has been successfully changed.

  8. Click “Log in” – you’ll be redirected to the login page.

  9. Enter your email and new password – and you’re in!

Note: The link in the email is valid for 60 minutes. If it has expired, simply restart the process using “Forgot password?”.

3. Rule out browser issues

If logging in still doesn’t work, even with the correct credentials, your browser might be the cause. Please try the following:

  • Refresh the page (Strg + R on Windows / Cmd + R on Mac).

  • Open the login page in a different browser (e.g. Chrome, Firefox, Safari).

  • Clear your browser’s cache and cookies.

  • Try opening the login page in Incognito or Private Mode.

What is Incognito/Private Mode?

This is a special browser mode where no stored data (cookies, cache, extensions) is used. It helps rule out problems caused by saved session data or outdated settings.

You can open this mode via your browser’s menu or by using one of the following keyboard shortcuts:

Browser

Mode Name

Windows

Mac

Chrome

Incognito Window

Ctrl + Shift + N

Cmd + Shift + N

Firefox

Private Window

Ctrl + Shift + P

Cmd + Shift + P

Safari (Mac only)

Private Window

Cmd + Shift + N

Microsoft Edge

InPrivate Window

Ctrl + Shift + N

Cmd + Shift + N

Open https://app.smarta.tax/login in a private window and try logging in again.

Tip: You can also go through the password reset process (see section 2) in Incognito/Private Mode – especially useful if the process doesn’t work in your normal browser or you don’t receive the reset email.

4. Login lockout after multiple failed attempts

After five unsuccessful login attempts, your account will be temporarily locked for security reasons. During this time, logging in is not possible – even with the correct password.

If this happens, please wait one to two hours and try again. You can also reset your password again just to be sure (see section 2).

5. Check your internet connection and device

  • Make sure you’re connected to the internet.

  • Try logging in from a different device (e.g. smartphone, tablet).

  • Restart your browser or your device if needed.

6. Contact support
