Working with Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) in assessments

How to set up the Multiple Choice Question element in a training course.

Permissions needed:

  • Edit content

When creating a module or editing a module, you can configure settings for MCQs globally or individually.

Configuring settings globally

Find the module and select MCO configuration in the Module sidebar. Select Edit for the MCQ setting you want to change:

1. Open the MCQ element in the assessment you're adding or editing

2. Select the Content tab and turn off (toggle is on by default) the Use global settings tab:

Setting name

What it does

Quiz ID

Use for the course scoring calculations. You can assign the same ID for all MCQs, or separate them to show scores for specific parts of the course.

Order of items

Set whether questions appear in the set order or randomly.

Number of attempts

How many times you want to allow users to retry incorrect MCQs

One click response

Works with MCQs that have only one correct option. User's answers are recorded as they enter them, without selecting Submit.

Show icons

Show or hide icons after the MCQ is answered.

Use scoring

Allow scoring.

Option width (1%–100%)

By default, each option appears at 100%. To show options horizontally, divide 100 by the number of options. For example, with four options, set the width at 25%.

Fully correct question points

Number of points the user gets when they answer the MCQ correctly (with no incorrect answers selected).

Partially correct question points

Number of points the user gets when they answer some of the MCQ's correct answers (with no incorrect answers selected).

Incorrect question points

Number of points the user gets when they answer the MCQ incorrectly (with at least one incorrect answer selected).

Amber question points

Number of points the user gets when selecting an amber option (partially correct).

Use bets

Activate to allow users to say how sure they are of their answers. Award users points for betting when they're correct, and deduct points when they bet and the answer is incorrect.

Bet won points

Set how many points for betting successfully.

Bet lost points

Set how many points for betting unsuccessfully.

Use sound

Set whether user feedback is accompanied by sound. Sounds are uploaded in the global settings

Completion actions

Select this tab to define what happens when the MCQ is:

  • Completed

  • Passed

  • Failed

  • Amber

  • Partically correct

Question

Select this tab when you want to enter the question. Use the style

Select this tab and there are two predefined options for:

  • One correct option

  • Multiple correct options

Remove the option you're not using.

Options

Enter the options with the style

Select the radio button (Incorrect, correct, partially correct). You can also edit the Number of options field.

Explanation

Enter an explanation that appears after the MCQ is answered, and assign the style

You'll find some predefined feedback messages to edit or remove:

  • [confirmationIcon] [result] shows an MCQ icon and Modlbl question wording

  • Selected option [selectedOptions], correct option [correctOptions] shows the options selected compared to options that are correct

  • [scoreIcon] You have scored [points] points / [lost_scoreIcon] You have lost [points] points / [scoreIcon] You have scored [points] points shows a score icon and points achieved (only one of these will appear)

Avoid editing wording in [square brackets]. Change these in global settings
