Registration in the population register at the municipality

Updated over 10 months ago

In the Netherlands it is mandatory to register with the municipality in which you will live. This is also called the Municipal Personal Records Database (BRP). The registration itself is free of charge.

Visit the government website for more information about the BRP and conditions.

How do I register in the population register?

After signing your rental agreement and no later than 5 working days after your actual move, you must register with the municipality of your new home.

To register in the population register, you must go to the website of the municipality of your new rental home. You can make an appointment via this website.

Registration in the population register is free of charge.

On the website you can find which documents are required to take with you. Most municipalities ask you to bring:

  1. Identification (passport or ID card)

  2. Proof of occupancy, take a copy of the rental contract with you.
