IG Markets CFD trading — FAQs

Why should I use IG Markets CFD trading?

IG Markets CFD trading gives you access to financial markets without needing to own the underlying asset. You can take positions on price movements across shares, indices, forex, and commodities using leverage — meaning you only need to commit a fraction of the total trade value to open a position.

We built IG Markets on IG's infrastructure, which has been operating for over 45 years. This means you benefit from the same execution standards, pricing, and market access that power IG's full trading platform.

What are the key benefits of IG Markets CFD trading?

  • Leverage You only need to deposit a margin to open a position — a fraction of the total trade value. Your profits and losses are calculated on the full position size, not just the margin.

  • Long and short trading You can go long (buy) if you expect prices to rise, or go short (sell) if you expect prices to fall — across all supported markets.

  • No asset ownership required CFDs give you price exposure without owning the asset, potentially reducing the cost and administrative requirements of direct ownership.

  • Best execution standards We apply the same execution practices as IG's full platform — including competitive pricing from multiple venues, high fill rates, and automated execution with no manual intervention on active orders.

Who is IG Markets CFD trading designed for?

IG Markets is designed for you if you want access to leveraged markets through a simplified and intuitive platform. It is well suited for:

  • You if you're newer and understand basic market concepts but find advanced platforms too complex

  • You if you're experienced but prefer a focused experience without unnecessary tools

The common goal is simple — giving you the ability to open and manage CFD positions without navigating unnecessary complexity.

What makes IG Markets CFD trading different from other trading platforms?

  • Simplified experience We focus on what matters most — opening, managing, and closing positions — without overwhelming you with rarely used features.

  • Built on IG's infrastructure As the world's largest CFD provider by revenue, we provide you access to the same pricing engine, liquidity pools, and execution technology used on IG's full platform.

  • Competitive pricing We source prices from multiple venues. With our scale, we can offer tight spreads and, in some cases, prices that match or improve on the underlying market.

  • Best execution We aim to fill your orders at the requested price or better. If the price moves in your favour before execution, you receive that improvement — never a worse price.

Is IG Markets CFD trading available on both iOS and Android?

Yes, you can access IG Markets CFD trading on both iOS and Android.

Can I trade IG Markets CFDs on a tablet?

Yes, you can trade IG Markets CFDs on a tablet. As a mobile-first platform, we have designed IG Markets to be simple and intuitive across all mobile devices, including tablets.

What features are available only on the IG Markets app?

  • Notional value trading When you open a trade on IG Markets, you enter your position size as a notional value rather than a number of contracts. This means you always know your exact exposure to the market — notional value is what your profits and losses are based on, not your margin.

  • Simplified point value for FX, commodities and indices For these asset classes, every 1 point move in your favour on a 1-contract position returns $1 in the native currency of that market. This makes it straightforward to calculate your potential profit or loss before entering a trade.

  • No separate commission on shares and ETFs When you trade shares and ETFs on IG Markets, there is no separate commission charge. The cost of the trade is built into the spread.

What happens if I uninstall the IG Markets app?

You will no longer be able to access your IG Markets account as it is strictly a mobile application.

How do I update the IG Markets app?

By updating the application in Play Store or Google Play.

What happens if there is high volatility or slippage in IG Markets CFD trading?

Spreads may widen significantly in volatile conditions (e.g., out-of-hours US reporting season).

What happens if I lose internet connection during IG Markets CFD trading?

You need a stable internet connection to log in and trade on IG Markets CFD. If you lose connectivity mid-session, you won't be able to place or manage trades until your connection is restored.

IG isn't able to intervene or take action on your account as a result of connectivity issues on your end — any open positions remain as they are until you're back online and able to manage them yourself.

Can I reopen a closed IG Markets CFD trading position?

No. Once a position is closed, it can't be reopened. If you want to re-enter the same market, you'll need to open a new position.

What happens to my IG Markets CFD trading positions during a market halt or trading suspension?

During a market halt or trading suspension, you won't be able to open or close positions in the affected market. Your existing positions remain open until trading resumes.

What happens if a share that I am trading delists?

The exchange will release information when a stock is suspended/delisted. If a stock is suspended/delisted, we would have to wait for the stock to become tradeable again – which is outside of IG's control.

When a stock delists, our corporate actions and risk departments will review the position and handle it according to the specific circumstances of the delisting. We will contact you regarding any changes to your position or margin requirements.

If you own shares in a company that delists on your IG leveraged account, we can close the position completely upon request and thus waive your right to potential future proceeds. This is because when you trade on leverage, you're trading over-the-counter with us - so we're able to take care of things like this in-house.

Is there a demo or practice mode for IG Markets CFD trading?

No, there are no demo accounts at the moment.
