Do I need to order installation?

Why installation is part of every white goods order, what the technician does on the day, and why an electric cooker needs a dedicated circuit.

You do not need to order installation separately. Installation is part of every white goods order, which means washing machines, fridges and cookers. Its cost is built into the price you see on the platform.

What installation covers

Installation covers the electrical connection, not just placing the appliance in the kitchen. A qualified technician makes the connection on the delivery day.

The delivery team will also unpack the item, position it where it is going, and take the packaging away.

Why an electric cooker needs a dedicated circuit

An electric cooker needs its own electrical circuit, separate from the sockets in the room. Twin-cavity and high-wattage models often need a 32 amp supply. A standard plug socket is 13 amp.

There are four reasons this matters:

  • Wiring capacity. Ordinary sockets and cabling cannot carry the load a cooker draws. Overloading them is a fire risk.

  • Hardwired connection. Many cookers connect through a cooker outlet plate, a fixed connection point wired directly into the consumer unit (the fuse box). There is no plug to push into a wall socket.

  • Isolation switch. UK regulations require a separate way to cut the power to the cooker. This is usually a switch mounted near it, and it must be installed and positioned correctly.

  • Building regulations. Electrical work of this kind falls under Part P of the Building Regulations, which covers electrical safety in homes. It must be done, or signed off, by a competent person. In some cases that means a registered electrician.

Items that do not include installation

Furniture and Home Goods items do not include installation. That covers furniture, home bundles, and small electricals such as kettles and microwaves.

What you can choose to add

Removal of your recipient's existing item is the option you can add to a white goods order. The price adjusts when you add it, and the platform shows what is available for each item.

Installation cannot be turned down

Because installation is part of the order, your recipient cannot turn it away on the delivery day. If they do, the delivery team cannot complete the delivery and will take the item back.

Tell your recipient to expect installation, so the delivery goes ahead first time. See Sending an appliance: what you need to know before sending for the full pre-send checklist.
