Are Huel ingredients sustainable?

Explains Huel's approach to sustainable ingredient selection, covering plant-based sourcing, carbon impact, deforestation avoidance, and regenerative agriculture.

Written by Jamie Forbes

Yes, Huel carefully selects its ingredients with sustainability as a core consideration. All Huel products are 100% plant-based, and Huel's core ingredients — including oats, peas, and flaxseed — are chosen in part because of their lower environmental footprint compared to animal-based alternatives.

Plant-based from the ground up

Plant-based ingredients generally require less land, less water, and produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions than animal-based protein sources. By building all products around plant-based ingredients, Huel starts from a strong sustainability baseline.

Carbon footprint monitoring

Huel measures the carbon footprint of all its products using a full life cycle assessment approach. Every Huel meal is targeted to come in below 0.5 kg CO₂e, aligned with a 1.5°C climate pathway.

Deforestation and high-risk ingredients

Huel does not use palm oil in any products, and requires RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) or equivalent certification for any ingredients that could be linked to deforestation.

Regenerative agriculture

Huel is investing in regenerative agriculture sourcing, currently including regenerative oats through a partnership with Gentle Farming in the UK.

Continuous improvement

Huel continually reviews its ingredient sourcing to reduce carbon impact, avoid deforestation-linked ingredients, and support responsible and regenerative agriculture.
