Why do you not use organic ingredients?

Explains why Huel does not use certified organic ingredients, covering cost, scale, and sustainability considerations.

Written by Jamie Forbes

Huel chooses not to use certified organic ingredients for several practical and sustainability reasons.

Cost and accessibility

Certified organic ingredients are significantly more expensive to produce and source. Using them across all products would increase Huel's prices considerably, which would work against Huel's core mission of making nutritionally complete food accessible to as many people as possible.

Yield and consistency at scale

Organic farming typically produces lower yields than conventional farming. At Huel's production scale, relying on organic ingredients would require more land to grow the same quantity of food — which can have its own environmental trade-offs, including the potential for increased deforestation.

Sustainability isn't synonymous with organic

While organic farming avoids synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, it isn't always the most environmentally efficient choice at scale. Huel instead focuses on measurable sustainability outcomes: reducing carbon footprint, minimizing water use, avoiding deforestation-linked ingredients, and investing in regenerative agriculture.

Some products do include organic components

Some Huel US blends — such as the Superblend and Antioxidant Greens — do include organic components where they add nutritional value and are available at viable quality and scale.
