Reviewing The Results

The following Home Dashboard view provides a good example to demonstrate the information that DepenSys provides. A PDF example is reproduced further down this article.

This dashboard shows a nursing home of 45 beds at 89% occupancy - 40 residents, 37 of whom require nursing care. The top line of figures shows that DepenSys has calculated that the residents require a total of 167.9 hours of care to meet their needs in each 24-hour day, of which 42.6 hours is skilled hours, which in this case would mostly be registered nurses. The actual staffing figure is 169.5 hours per day, which the display shows is 1.6 hours over the calculated staffing requirement. The skilled hours component of 42.6 hours calculated is covered by the 47 actual skilled hours, over by 4.4 hours.

The day ratio averages one member of staff to 4.5 residents, and one to 8.3 residents at night.

The Dependency Index is a simple indicator of the overall dependency of the home expressed in the average hours of care required per resident (to 1 decimal place); in this case, 4.1 hours in each 24-hour day.

The graphs show a rolling 12-month display of:

  1. DepenSys vs actual hours: note that in November, there was a fall in the overall dependency for that month with the staffing hours remaining the same;

  2. Occupancy % vs Average Dependency

  3. Skill Mix Analysis

It is for the managers of the home to determine whether the data input is accurate, and whether the staffing is effectively meeting the residents’ needs.
