📧 Unsubscribe Options in Email Communications

Introduction

Giving guests the ability to opt out of marketing communications is both a best practice and a legal requirement in many countries. This article explains how Bookboost handles unsubscribe links in emails and what options are available to hoteliers.

Main Concept

Bookboost supports the inclusion of unsubscribe links in email campaigns. There are two approaches to unsubscribing, and understanding the difference is important for how you design your campaigns and manage guest consent preferences.

  • Global unsubscribe — A single button or link that opts the guest out of all marketing communications from the property.

  • Granular unsubscribe — Multiple buttons or links that allow guests to opt out of specific types of communication (e.g. promotional emails only, while staying subscribed to transactional or journey-based messages).

Use Cases

  • Including a standard "Unsubscribe from all marketing emails" link at the bottom of newsletters and broadcast campaigns

  • Offering guests the choice to opt out of specific campaign types (e.g. unsubscribe from promotions but keep receiving pre-arrival messages)

  • Meeting GDPR and similar legal requirements for consent and opt-out in guest communications

  • Reducing unsubscribe rates by giving guests a more granular control over what they receive

Configuration and Setup

  1. Open the Campaign you want to configure in Bookboost.

  2. Navigate to the email template editor.

  3. In the footer of your email, add an unsubscribe link block.

  4. Choose your approach:

  5. Save and publish the campaign.

Advanced Setup

Granular unsubscribe setup:

  • You can configure multiple unsubscribe options tied to different consent categories in the guest profile.

  • Each link targets a specific consent flag, so unsubscribing from one type does not affect the guest's other subscriptions.

  • This approach requires that your consent categories are correctly configured in Settings before linking them to unsubscribe actions.

Global unsubscribe:

  • A single unsubscribe action will set the guest's marketing consent to opted out across all campaign types.

  • This is the simpler setup and recommended if you don't have multiple distinct communication categories.

⚠️ Known Issues or Limitations

  1. The granular unsubscribe approach requires consent categories to be pre-configured in the platform. If they are not set up, only the global option is available.

  2. Once a guest globally unsubscribes, they will not receive any marketing campaigns until consent is re-obtained — re-subscribing requires a manual update or a new consent collection flow.

Conclusion

Bookboost supports both a single global unsubscribe and granular per-category unsubscribe options in email campaigns. The right choice depends on how many distinct communication types you send and whether your consent categories are configured. For simplicity, a global unsubscribe is sufficient for most properties. For more sophisticated setups with multiple campaign types, granular unsubscribes give guests more control and typically result in lower overall opt-out rates. 🎯
