Step-by-Step Guide
☝️ Important! The maximum file size is limited to 20 MB, and a maximum of 10,000 rows of contacts. If the file is larger or you want to upload more than 10,000 contacts at once, please split the file.
1. Log in to Superchat.
2. Click on Contacts in the top navigation bar.
3. Next, click on Import.
4. Drag and drop your CSV file and click Upload.
5. Once you've selected the CSV file, you'll see a preview of it. Here, you can change the formatting until the table looks like your original. Usually everything should be transferred correctly, so you don't don't need to do anything in this step.
6. You'll be asked if the first row of your CSV file is a header row. Typically, the header row of a CSV file contains column labels that define the type of content in each column, such as First Name, Last Name, Email, and Phone.
7. Lastly, Superchat will prompt you to select the relevant columns that contain the email addresses, phone numbers, first names, and last names of your contacts. For each contact attribute, choose the corresponding column from the dropdown list. In addition to standard contact attributes (e.g. First Name, Last Name, E-Mail), you can also import custom contact attributes that you've defined in the contact settings beforehand. When importing different contact attributes, make sure to follow the supported formatting for each data type.
Formatting of Individual Data Types
For email contacts, they must be valid email addresses. If a contact's email is invalid, it will be ignored and not imported. Example of a valid email address: susie.super@gmail.com.
Phone
The contact import supports only the international phone number format E.164, which means phone numbers are valid only with the respective country code (e.g., for the UK +44) and can have a maximum of 15 digits. Example of a valid phone number: +44 20 1234 5678.
Date
For importing a date via contact import, the date must be formatted as follows: YYYY-MM-DD. Example of a valid date: 2023-01-17.
Date and Time in One Panel
For importing a date and time, the panel must be formatted as follows: YYYY-MM-DD hh:mm:ssZ. Example of a valid panel with date and time: 2023-01-17 12:15:00Z.
Number
The contact import supports all integral numbers (positive and negative numbers without decimals). If you try to upload a decimal number (a number with a decimal point), the numbers after it will be ignored in the contact import. Example: When importing 4.5, only the number 4 will be recognized and carried over.
Single Choice
To upload options for a contact property with the "Single Choice" type, ensure the options match exactly in both Superchat and the CSV file. For example, if you have a contact property named "Favourite Colour" with the "Single Choice" type in Superchat and the options are Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow, you should have a column named "Favourite Colour" in your CSV file, specifying the chosen colour for each contact.
Multiple Choice
Similar to importing "Single Choice" contact properties, you can also import "Multiple Choice" contact properties. The options in your CSV file should be separated by commas. For example, if you have a contact property named "Favourite Colours" with the "Multiple Choice" type in Superchat and the options are Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow, your CSV file column "Favourite Colours" should specify the chosen colours for each contact, separated by commas.
Updating Contact Properties
Contacts that already exist and are imported again will be updated. If an existing contact is missing an attribute that is present in the imported contact, the existing contact will be updated, and the missing attribute is added.
Deleting Contact Imports
Under Superchat > Settings > Company Settings > Contacts > Contact Import, you'll find an overview of all completed contact imports. Using the menu on the right-hand side, you have the option to download your CSV file or delete the entire import.
