How can the reasonable burden threshold be exceeded?

Deduct extraordinary expenses from taxes

Banner: Exceed the reasonable burden threshold

To exceed the reasonable personal burden, you must incur more extraordinary costs during the year than the tax office considers "reasonable." These include, for example:

  • Medical bills and co-payments for medications

  • Travel expenses for treatments

  • Care and nursing costs

  • Costs for glasses, dental treatments, or surgeries

  • Funeral expenses (under certain conditions)

Important: Only necessary and medically justified expenses count.

You will need appropriate invoices and proof.

When do you know if you have exceeded the threshold?

Unfortunately, you will only find out at the end of the year—when you file your tax return and all the figures are available. Only then will the tax office assess whether your extraordinary expenses exceed the reasonable amount.
