What are electronic services?
Electronic services are those that are provided via the Internet or other electronic networks and are heavily dependent on information technology. Typical examples are
Web hosting and online storage space
Access to software, music, films and games
Online services such as newspapers, web advertising, search engines
Distance learning via the Internet
Delimitation: When are they not electronic services?
Not all online services fall under the category of ‘electronic services’. Here are some examples of exceptions:
Internet as a means of communication: In the case of traditional auctions, distance learning by post or the repair of IT equipment, the Internet merely serves as a means of communication without the main service being provided via the network.
Services such as Internet telephony, e-mail communication and Internet access: These also do not fall under the definition of electronic services.
Services booked online but not provided online: Services such as radio broadcasting, television services, the hire of transport or catering services are not electronic services, even if they are booked online.
Conclusion
Electronic services are characterised by their dependence on information technology and their provision via electronic networks. Conversely, many online services that only use the Internet as a communication medium or are not provided directly online are not classified as electronic services.
