Create a triangulated ground model of an area

Here's how to create a ground model using the grid generation tool in Design.

Updated over a week ago

Follow these steps to create a triangulated ground model of an area in Design.

  1. Draw a line over the area you want to create a ground model for.

  2. Select the line and go to the FUNCTIONS - Generate grid.

  3. In the right panel, you have several options for how the grid will be generated.

    Snapping

Here, you choose whether snapping should occur to an object, i.e., a design or CAD files that are visible in the scene. Or you can also choose whether snapping should occur at a specific specified height.

    Distance between points (m)
For option to snap to Asset. Here, you choose the distance in meters for the grid during generation. The default is 1 meter, but you can choose a value down to 0.02 meters. Note that too tight a grid can make the model heavy to work with. It is recommended to use a larger point distance for a large area or refine the area more.

  4. Start the grid generation with Start.

  5. When the grid generation is complete, you will see all the points created within the area. Here, you can edit the points before triangulation or make other adjustments, such as segmenting the line containing all points.

  6. To create the triangulation of the area, select everything to be included using the selection tool, typically with Ctrl + a.

  7. To triangulate, press T, or go to FUNCTIONS - Triangulate.

  8. Here, you can edit the triangulated model and export the model to LandXML after saving the geometry to the object list.
