How to upload waste generated in operations emissions data.

Waste Generated in Operations emissions emerge from the way the waste is treated by third parties, whether that is methane (CH4) from landfills, carbon dioxide (CO2) from incineration, or nitrous oxide (N2O) from wastewater treatment plants.

There are four Waste Generated in Operations calculation methods to choose from:

  • Amount per waste type uses the amount of waste per waste type (i.e. glass, paper, plastics, organic, residual or wastewater). (Recommended)

  • Total waste weight uses the total weight of waste, not broken down by waste type

  • Fashion: Weight per waste treatment type is used to calculate emissions emerging from textile waste. You need data on the weight of waste generated, broken down by treatment type.

  • Bring Your Own Emissions allows you to upload your own pre-calculated emissions to the Plan A platform.

Step-by-step: Format Amount per waste type data (Recommended)

There are several ways to enter your data. Regardless of which method you choose, you must include all required information to ensure accurate emissions calculations. Below, we’ve listed the key data points you need to include.

Column A: start_date

  • The first day of your data period.

  • The suggested date format is YYYY-MM-DD, but check the Accepted Formats article to see a full list of formats you can use

  • This field is mandatory.

Column B: end_date

  • The last day of your data period.

  • The suggested date format is YYYY-MM-DD, but check the Accepted Formats article to see a full list of formats you can use.

  • It can be the same as the start date if you are entering data for just one day.

  • This field is mandatory.

Column C: location

  • The ISO-3166 alpha-2 code of the country where the emissions occurred (e.g., DE).

  • This field is mandatory.

Column D: facility_name

  • The facility that the respective emissions should be allocated to.

  • Make sure to apply exactly the same names you set in ‘Organisational Data’.

Column E: value

  • Waste weight: The waste weight for all waste types.

  • Enter numeric values only and use a dot as the decimal separator (e.g. 25634.20).

  • This field is mandatory.

Column F: value.unit

  • Select the unit for waste weight.

  • For solid waste:

    • kg (kilogram)

    • t (metric tonne = 1000 kgs)

    • ton (short ton = 2000 lbs)

    • lb (pound)

  • For waste water:

    • l (litre)

    • m3 (cubic metre)

    • gal (US gallon)

    • bbl (barrel)

  • This field is mandatory.

Column G: waste_type

  • The type of waste.

  • Choose from:

    • plastic

    • paper

    • organic

    • glass

    • residual

    • wastewater

  • This field is mandatory.

Optional tags

  • As always, you can add optional columns for company specific tags.

Column D: facility_name

  • The facility that the respective emissions should be allocated to.

  • Make sure to apply exactly the same names you set in ‘Organisational Data’.

Column E: value

  • Waste weight: The waste weight in the selected units for the given time period.

  • Enter numeric values only and use a dot as the decimal separator (e.g. 25634.20).

  • This field is mandatory.

Column F: value.unit

  • Select the units of weight of waste:

    • kg (kilogram)

    • lb (pound)

    • t (metric tonne = 1000 kgs)

    • ton (short ton = 2000 lbs)

  • This field is mandatory.

Column B: end_date

  • The last day of your data period.

  • The suggested date format is YYYY-MM-DD, but check the Accepted Formats article to see a full list of formats you can use.

  • It can be the same as the start date if you are entering data for just one day.

Column C: location

  • The ISO-3166 alpha-2 code of the country where the waste treatment provider is located.

  • This field is mandatory.

Column D: facility_name

  • The facility that the respective emissions should be allocated to.

  • Make sure to apply exactly the same names you set in ‘Organisational Data’.

Column E: value

  • The weight of waste that was treated using the selected treatment type.

  • Format: Numbers using periods as decimal separators.

  • This field is mandatory.

Column F: value.unit

  • Select the measurement unit of your weight data.

    • kg (kilogram)

    • t (metric tonne)

    • ton (short ton)

    • lb (pound)

  • This field is mandatory.

Column G: waste_type

  • The type of waste.

  • Select 'textile'.

  • This field is mandatory.

Column H: treatment_type

  • How this waste was treated.

  • Choose from:

    • incineration

    • landfilling

    • unknown

  • This field is mandatory.

Column I: quantity

  • Enter the quantity to adjust the waste weight based on your reporting method.

    • If you entered the weight of a single SKU in the 'value' column, use the quantity field to multiply this by the number of SKUs treated.

    • If you entered the total waste weight treated using the selected treatment method in the 'value' column, set the quantity to 1.

  • Format: Numbers using periods as decimal separators.

  • This field is mandatory.

Column J: product_type

  • The type of product related to this textile waste.

  • This field is optional but recommended to give you deeper insights into your emissions.

Column K: material_name

  • The type of material related to this textile waste.

  • This field is optional but recommended to give you deeper insights into your emissions.

Column L: product_reference

  • The product reference related to this textile waste.

  • This field is optional but recommended to give you deeper insights into your emissions.

Column M: product_category_1

  • If there is a product category tied to this textile waste, you can optionally enter it in this field to gain more detailed insights.

Column N: product_category_2

  • If there is a product subcategory tied to this textile waste, you can optionally enter it in this field to gain more detailed insights.

Column O: product_category_3

  • If there is another product subcategory tied to this textile waste, you can optionally enter it in this field to gain more detailed insights.

Column P: collection

  • If this waste is linked to a fashion collection, you can optionally enter the collection name in this field for more detailed insights.

Step-by-step: Format BYOE

There are several ways to enter your data. Regardless of which method you choose, you must include all required information to ensure accurate emissions calculations. Below, we’ve listed the key data points you need to include.

Column A: start_date

  • The first day of your data period.

  • The suggested date format is YYYY-MM-DD, but check the Accepted Formats article to see a full list of formats you can use.

  • This field is mandatory.

Column B: end_date

  • The last day of your data period. It can be the same as the start date if you are entering data for just one day.

  • The suggested date format is YYYY-MM-DD, but check the Accepted Formats article to see a full list of formats you can use.

  • This field is mandatory.

Column C: location

  • The ISO-3166 alpha-2 code of the country where the emissions occurred (e.g., DE).

  • This field is mandatory.

Column D: facility_name

  • The facility that the respective emissions should be allocated to.

  • Make sure to apply exactly the same names you set here to all the other templates asking for a "facility_name" input.

Column E: value

  • Your own emissions in kg CO₂e.

  • Enter numeric values only and use a dot as the decimal separator (e.g. 25634.20).

  • This field is mandatory.

Optional tags

  • As always, you can add optional columns for company specific tags.

Reminder: It is not Plan A’s responsibility to ensure the calculation of those 3rd parties are in accordance with the GHG Protocol. There is no verification or validation of BOYE emissions through Plan A.
