Waste Generated in Operations emissions emerge from the way the waste is treated by third parties, whether that is methane (CH4) from landfills, carbon dioxide (CO2) from incineration, or nitrous oxide (N2O) from wastewater treatment plants.
According to the GHG Protocol, Waste-related emissions are generated at two points: operations and end-of-life treatment of sold products. More specifically, they are defined as:
1) “Waste generated in operations includes emissions from third-party disposal and treatment of waste generated in the reporting company’s owned or controlled operations in the reporting year.”
These emissions are accounted within the Waste generated in operations category.
2) “End-of-Life Treatment of Sold Products includes emissions from the waste disposal and treatment of products sold by the reporting company (in the reporting year) at the end of their life.”
These emissions are accounted for within the End-of-life treatment of sold products category.
