Fuel- and energy-related activities cover all emissions associated with the production, transmission, and distribution of fuels and energy that your organisation purchases and consumes.
While emissions from fuel combustion are captured in Scope 1 and emissions from purchased energy generation are captured in Scope 2, this category covers emissions from the entire lifecycle of fuels and energy beyond just direct use.
To break it down further:
Scope 1 (Direct use): Emissions from fuel burned directly by your organisation, like in stationary or mobile combustion, are covered under Scope 1.
Scope 2 (Purchased energy): Emissions from the generation of electricity or other energy that you purchase are counted in Scope 2.
Scope 3 (Fuel- and energy-related activities): This category captures additional emissions from the entire lifecycle of your fuels and energy beyond direct use—such as the emissions associated with their production, transmission, and distribution. These emissions are referred to as Well-to-Tank (WTT) emissions.
Why do I see emissions in this category when I haven’t uploaded any data?
You don’t need to upload data directly for Fuel- and energy-related activities. This category automatically uses the data you provide for Stationary combustion, Mobile combustion, and Purchased electricity (if using non-renewable energy) to calculate these emissions. This means you don’t have to upload the same data twice.
For example, when you enter data for Mobile combustion, emissions are calculated for both Mobile combustion and Fuel- and energy-related activities.
A few important notes:
Emissions won’t be calculated automatically if you’ve uploaded Bring Your Own Emissions (BYOE) data for Stationary combustion, Mobile combustion, or Purchased electricity.
If you’re using 100% renewable energy or National Averages for Purchased electricity, Fuel- and energy-related activity emissions won't be calculated.
Emissions from Purchased heating aren’t included here by default. To track these, you can upload them using BYOE.
