How Plan A Calculates Fugitive Emissions

Here is how your fugitive emissions data is used for emissions calculation once uploaded to Plan A.

The way Plan A calculates Fugitive Emissions depends on the calculation method you select when uploading your data.

Mass and type of refrigerant used

This calculation method entails multiplying the mass per refrigerant type leaked by the 100-year Global Warming Potentials relevant to the type of refrigerant and the consumption period.

Number of cooling equipment units

This calculation method entails multiplying the number of cooling equipment units by the average emission factor relevant to the type and subtype of the cooling equipment and life phase (installation, operation or disposal). Other factors applied in the background that impact the emission factor are:

  • Annual leakage rates specific to each cooling equipment type per life phase

  • The average % of refrigerant remaining in the cooling equipment when disposed

  • The recovery efficiency per cooling equipment type, or the percentage of remaining refrigerants in disposed equipment that is recovered by the waste collector

  • The average Global Warming Potential per refrigerant type

Bring Your Own Emissions

Bring Your Own Emissions allows you to upload your own pre-calculated emissions to the Plan A platform. For more information, see here.
