The way Plan A calculates Purchased Goods and Services emissions depends on the calculation method you select when uploading your data.

Spend-based method

This calculation method entails multiplying the overall spend amount on a specific product or service category by an emission factor that is applicable to the particular category, timeframe, and location (supplier's location).

Our emission factors for Purchased Goods and Services are informed by a database which provides the categorisation of goods and services that we ask you to match with your company's purchases. The (optional) names of your suppliers do not influence the calculated emissions but are used only to visualise the emission results.

In your spend data, you may notice some negative figures, reflecting refunds. These should still be included in your data upload so that previously reported emissions relating to refunded goods can be deducted from your carbon balance accordingly. Negative spend data will be reflected as negative emissions values in the month the refund was given.

The calculation methodology adheres to the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol.

Water consumption method

This calculation method entails multiplying (tap) water consumption by an emission factor applicable to the timeframe and location.

This method accounts for the emissions associated with the use of tap water in the given location and timeframe. Activities included in the emission calculation encompass tap water treatment before entering the local distribution network, as well as emissions related to water transportation to the end consumer.

Fashion: Average data method

This method is used for calculating purchased fashion material production emissions through the Average data method according to GHG protocol. The calculation entails multiplying the mass of the product, quantity of units purchased, proportion of each composed material in the product with a conversion factor that is selected based on the material name and the location of manufacturing. The emission factor for the material contains all the upstream cradle to gate emission occurring from the acquiring of raw material to the finished material including waste treatment, energy, water, capital goods for production, waste treatment and other material flows.

This method is also used for calculating purchased fashion product assembly emissions through the Average data method according to GHG protocol. The calculation entails multiplying the mass of the product, quantity of units purchased with a conversion factor that is selected based on the product type and the location of assembly. The emission factor for the assembly contains all the emission occurring from assembly of the products varying based on the product category (clothing, jewellery, footwear and fashion accessories). Emissions from the assembly service provided to create the final product as well as the auxiliary materials and laundry (excluded for jewellery, footwear and fashion accessories) is included in this boundary. The service includes energy, water and upstream waste treatment of waste as well.

Packaging method

The calculation method entails multiplying the mass of the packaging material with the quantity of packaging and applying emission factors relevant to the specified packaging name, geography and timeframe. Within this scope category, the emission factor encompasses upstream emissions from manufacturing processes and transportation activities. For the packaging material where the name 'recycled' or 'recycled mix' is not specified, it originates from the primary lifecycle of the materials, and where they are specified there is either a mix of secondary materials, or is completely made up of recycled materials.

Bring Your Own Emission Factors (BYOEF)

This calculation method entails calculating the upstream cradle-to-gate emissions from purchased goods and services. The calculation involves multiplying the reference flow value of the purchased good/service by a custom emission factor and the quantity multiplier, all provided by the client relevant to the reporting timeframe and location. Emission factors provided by the client should represent all the upstream cradle-to-gate emission impacts, including raw material acquisition, production, and transportation.

The calculation methodology adheres to the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol. However, it's the reporting company's responsibility to ensure the accuracy of the inputs provided.
