Collect Employee Commute Data

To calculate your Employee Commute emissions, you will need to see what data your organisation has available and choose a calculation method accordingly.

It is important to note that Employee Commute includes both emissions from your employees commute to and from work as well as the emissions associated with working from home (e.g. energy used at home). Since Work From Home rates impact other components in calculating your company's emissions (such as a national averages for energy and heating consumption in the office), this data is uploaded as part of your Organisational Data. Nonetheless, Work From Home emissions are allocated to your Employee Commute emissions on the Measure page, as per GHG Protocol guidance.

To collect Employee Commute data (including Work From Home patterns), it's advisable to survey your employees directly since only they can best describe their commuting patterns in a given month. This can be done in conjunction with collecting their Business Travel information if you don't have this information to hand.

If you can't access data in the required formats, or have data for modes of transport not captured in our templates, please take a look at our advice here.

National Averages

When specific data is unavailable, National Averages can be used to calculate emissions. National Averages represent the average values for a given type of activity data within a specific location (usually this is on the country level where we have this data, but for the US, this is on the state level).

National Averages will be shown automatically when you have uploaded Organisational Data and haven't uploaded any data for Employee Commute.

If you don’t want to use National Averages to calculate emissions you can upload a template with the value set to 0 for the respective time and facility.
