How is Huel reducing plastic in its packaging?

Explains how Huel is reducing plastic use through 51% rPET in RTD bottles, lightweight packaging design, and pouch material innovation.

Written by Jamie Forbes

Huel is actively working to reduce plastic use and increase recycled content across its packaging range.

Recycled plastic in RTD bottles

Huel's ready-to-drink bottles — including Huel Black Edition RTD and Huel Lite RTD — are made with 51% recycled plastic (rPET). Using recycled PET plastic reduces the demand for virgin plastic and lowers the carbon footprint of the packaging.

Lightweight packaging design

Huel's powder pouches, while not currently recyclable, are designed to be as lightweight as possible. Lightweight packaging uses less material overall and produces lower transport emissions per unit — meaning less plastic ends up in circulation per meal.

Pouch material review

Huel is actively reviewing pouch materials to explore more recyclable or lower-impact alternatives that still maintain the barrier properties needed to protect product freshness and prevent food waste. Food waste itself has a significant environmental footprint, so packaging must balance recyclability with product protection.

Broader packaging roadmap

Reducing plastic is part of Huel's broader packaging sustainability agenda, which includes increasing recycled content, improving recyclability across all formats, and exploring new materials as viable options emerge.
