How does Huel compare to other meal options in sustainability?

Explains how Huel's plant-based meals compare to conventional meal options on carbon footprint, land use, water usage, and packaging.

Written by Jamie Forbes

Huel products are designed with sustainability as a core principle. Because all Huel products are fully plant-based and made from lower-impact ingredients, Huel meals typically have a significantly lower environmental footprint than conventional animal-based meal options.

Carbon footprint

Every Huel product has a measured carbon footprint. Huel Powder v3.1, for example, has a carbon footprint of around 1.98 kg CO₂e per 2,000 kcal — significantly lower than the global average diet. Meat-heavy meals can generate several times that amount for the same calorie count.

Land use

Plant-based ingredients like oats, peas, and flaxseed require far less land to produce than beef, lamb, or dairy. By replacing even one or two meals a day with Huel, customers can meaningfully reduce their personal land use impact.

Water use

Growing plant-based ingredients generally requires less water than raising livestock. Huel assesses the water impact of all ingredients in its supply chain to guide sourcing decisions.

Packaging

Huel uses recyclable and minimally packaged formats where possible, and continues to work on reducing packaging waste across all product lines.

Switching to Huel for even one meal a day is a simple, measurable step toward a more sustainable diet.
