Can I consume Huel if I've had oesophageal or stomach surgery?

Guidance on whether Huel is suitable after oesophageal or stomach surgery, including dumping syndrome considerations and when to seek medical advice.

Written by Jamie Forbes

If you've had surgery involving partial or total removal of your oesophagus or stomach, you may still be able to consume Huel — but you should follow the guidance provided by your healthcare team, just as you would with any other food.

Dumping syndrome and low-GI ingredients

Huel Powder v3.1 and Huel RTD (Ready-to-Drink) products contain low-glycaemic index (low-GI) ingredients, which may help reduce the risk of dumping syndrome — a condition common after gastrointestinal surgery where food moves too quickly from the stomach into the small intestine, causing nausea, cramping, or dizziness.

To support digestion and tolerance, start with smaller servings spread throughout the day rather than full meal-sized portions.

Nutrient absorption after surgery

Some types of gastrointestinal surgery can affect how well your body absorbs nutrients, or increase your overall nutritional requirements. Consult your doctor, dietitian, or clinical team before making Huel a regular part of your diet — they can assess whether Huel fits your specific nutritional plan.
