2-Factor Authentication (2FA) Setup on Coinmetro

Learn how to set up 2-Factor Authentication (2FA) on Coinmetro and how it works. Discover how it adds an extra layer of security to help protect your account.

Written by Sophie

2-Factor Authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of security to your account by requiring a unique, time-sensitive code each time you log in or perform certain actions.

Instead of relying only on your password, 2FA uses a second verification step generated by an app on your device. This means that even if someone knows your password, they still cannot access your account without your 2FA code.

We strongly recommend enabling 2FA to help protect your funds and personal information.

📱 What You Need Before You Start

To set up 2FA, you’ll need to install an authentication app on your mobile device. These apps generate secure, one-time codes that refresh every few seconds.

You can use any of the following apps:

Once installed, open the app and select “Add New Account”. You’ll then be able to scan a QR code or enter a setup key provided by Coinmetro.

How to Enable 2-Factor Authentication (2FA)

💻 On a Web Browser

  1. Hover the mouse over your user icon in the top right corner

  2. Go to Account

  3. Open the Security tab

  4. Find 2-Factor Authentication

  5. Click Set Up 2FA

  6. Scan the QR code using your 2FA app, or enter the provided key manually

  7. Enter the 6-digit code from your app to confirm

Classic Dashboard:

  1. Click your user avatar in the left sidebar

  2. Go to the Security tab

  3. Scroll to 2-Factor Authentication

  4. Click Set Up 2FA

  5. Scan the QR code or enter the setup key into your 2FA app

You can enable 2FA to protect the following actions on your account:

  • Signing in

  • Changing your password

  • Approving transactions

  • Managing your profile

This gives you full control over where you want additional security.

💾 Backup Your Recovery Details

When setting up 2FA, you’ll be given a QR code and a backup key. Make sure to save both of these securely. You will need them if you:

  • Change devices

  • Lose access to your 2FA app

  • Need to restore your account

Without these, regaining access may require additional verification steps.

🔄 Moving 2FA to a New Device

If you still have access to your current device:

  1. Go to the 2FA settings in your account

  2. Disable 2FA for each protected action (you’ll need your current 2FA code)

  3. Click Set Up New 2FA

  4. Follow the setup steps on your new device

⚠️ Lost Access to Your 2FA?

If you no longer have access to your 2FA device:

  • Use your saved backup key or QR code to restore access on a new device

  • If you don’t have your backup details, you will need to contact support and complete a verification process to reset your 2FA

💡 Important Things to Know

  • 2FA codes refresh every few seconds and can only be used once

  • Never share your 2FA codes with anyone

  • Coinmetro support will never ask for your 2FA codes

  • Losing your backup key can delay account recovery

  • Enabling 2FA significantly reduces the risk of unauthorized access

FAQs

🔑 What is 2FA and why should I use it?

2FA adds an extra layer of protection by requiring a one-time code in addition to your password. It helps prevent unauthorized access, even if your password is compromised.

📱 Do I need a mobile device to use 2FA?

Yes. You’ll need a smartphone or device with an authentication app installed to generate your codes.

🔄 Can I use the same 2FA setup on multiple devices?

Most authentication apps allow backups or multi-device syncing. However, this depends on the app you use. Always ensure your backup method is secure.

⏱️ Why is my 2FA code not working?

This is usually due to time desynchronization on your device. Make sure your phone’s time is set to update automatically and try again.

🔒 Can I disable 2FA later?

Yes. You can disable 2FA in your Security settings, but it’s strongly recommended to keep it enabled for account protection.

🆘 What happens if I lose access to my 2FA app and backup key?

You’ll need to contact support and complete identity verification before your 2FA can be reset. If you need us to reset your 2FA, please send an email to hello@coinmetro.com with the following details:

  1. Your full name

  2. Your registered phone number

  3. Your registered home address

  4. A selfie picture of you where we can see that you are holding both a valid ID (preferably the one you used to verify your account), and a pen-written note with the words “Coinmetro 2FA reset", your email address, and today's date. Please ensure that you are holding both the note and the ID in your selfie.
