Learning about the Calculation Column editor's layout gives you the knowledge to build your calculations more effectively.

Calculation Formula

The calculation defined in this field is the calculation that drives the data that you see within the column. It can be as complicated or as simple as you want. We will look at this in more detail later in the article when we look at creating calculations.

Calculation Column Properties

The Calculation Column properties are a mix of mandatory and optional (but recommended) fields. Filling out these fields well makes your Calculation Columns easily understood by other users.

1. Column Name (Mandatory field)

The name for the Calculation Column. This is also the name that appears in the header of the column when seen in:

  1. DataGrid

  2. Other Calculations (in the Columns list)

  3. Charts created using these columns use the column titles by default for the legends.

2. Short Name (Mandatory field)

Calculations within Explore use Short Name to reference column names, making calculations reusable and easily updated. There are two ways to arrive at a short name for your calculation.

a. Automatic

Typing in the Column Name field simultaneously creates a Short Name in the respective field.

b. Manual

You can change any Short Name (both Automatic and Manual) to create your own. Please ensure it is unique and has yet to be used in the same DataGrid. You can have the same Short Names in different DataGrids if you choose to.

3. Unit (Mandatory field)

Calculation columns need to have a Unit assigned to them. You are free to search and choose from the list of units available. Units are split into Numeric and Non-numeric units. Other than the units Boolean and String, all other units are grouped under Numeric.

Unit and Kind inputs work together to help you find the Unit of choice based on our algorithm.

What if you do not want a unit?

Please choose "No Unit For Calculation" if you do not want to assign a unit for the calculation column.

4. Kind

Columns can be of three Kinds: Numeric, Boolean and String. The available units are limited by the Kind selected and vice versa. Selecting a Unit updates the Kind without needing additional input.

5. Description

A good description of the purpose of the calculation is precious when you or others with access understand the calculation. Therefore, putting a clear description but keeping it concise at 250 characters is good practice.

Columns and Functions

The right side of the Calculation Column editor is split into multiple tabs, listing two readily available calculation element types that can be inserted into a calculation:

  1. Columns

  2. Functions

Columns

The columns tab lists all columns available in this specific DataGrid. If you want to use a DataSource or a Calculation, it should be available in the DataGrid.

How do I know which columns are used in my calculation?

The columns tab visually distinguishes columns that have been used in the current calculation from those that have not been used.

Can I search for a specific column?

Columns available in the DataGrid are all listed. You can search for a column by using the Filter Columns input field. This searches across the Column Title and the Short Name.

Functions

The functions tab helps you build calculations with explanations and examples. Hovering over the Info icon brings up information about the respective function.

Do you know if I can search for a specific function?

The Functions tab lists all of the functions supported in CoolPlanetOS. You can search for a function by using the Filter Functions input field. This filters the list to only those that match the search.
