What are steps?
Steps are the items that make up a program’s path. A path can include different types of steps:
Module – a section of the path that can group related steps together
Cog – a structured, chat-like coaching guide focused on a specific topic
Link – a clickable URL
Media – an image, video, document, or other media item
Use steps to arrange your program in the order you want participants to experience it.
Getting started
You can add, arrange, and edit steps in a program’s path editor. To access the path editor:
Go to Programs.
Select the program you want to edit.
Select Path.
Cogs
A cog is an interactive coaching guide. Cogs are made up of prompts, which appear to participants as a chat-like experience.
You can use cogs to:
introduce a topic
guide participants through reflection
ask questions
collect participant responses
invite participants to share insights
support learning, behavior change, or action
Create a new cog
To create a cog from the path editor:
Add a Cog step to your path.
If this is your first step, select Cog to add it.
If you already have steps in your program, hover over the space after or between steps and select +. Then, select Cog.
Select Add Cog.
Select Create new cog.
Enter your cog’s title and description, then select Create Cog.
Add an existing cog
You can also add an existing cog instead of creating a new one. If you add a cog from another program, Activate creates a copy of that cog and adds it to the current program.
Add a Cog step to your path.
If this is your first step, select Cog to add it.
If you already have steps in your program, hover over the space after or between steps and select +. Then, select Cog.
Select Add Cog.
All of the cogs in your organization’s programs appear. You can search for cogs by keyword, and/or filter by program.
Selected your chosen cog.
Edit a cog
To edit a cog:
Locate the cog in your path, then select the edit button.
Select Create draft in the cog editor to begin editing.
Your changes to the draft are saved automatically.
Participants will not see any changes to your cog until you publish it.
Some details you can edit include:
title
description
thumbnail image
associated step message
prompts
prompt order
prompt content
variables and analytics settings
ℹ️ Want to track responses to a prompt in analytics? Give the associated variable a clear, descriptive label and select Show in analytics where available.
Modules, Links, and Media
To create these steps, add them to your program path.
If this is your first step, select your desired step to add it.
If you already have steps in your program, hover over the space after or between steps and select +. Then, select your desired step.
Modules
Use modules to group related steps together. Edit a module when you want to update its name, description, or the steps it contains.
Links
Use link steps to direct participants to a webpage or external resource. Edit a link step when you need to update the URL, title, or supporting details.
Media
Use media steps to share images and videos. Edit a media step when you need to update the title and a description.
Summary
A program’s path controls the participant journey and which content they see.
Cogs are added to the path as cog steps.
Existing cogs from other programs can be copied into the current program when added.
You can return to the path editor to update steps before launching.
If a deployment is already live, some program or path changes may be limited.
