Questions and Assessments

In Sana, Questions and Assessments are essential to creating interactive learning experiences. These tools enable you to assess learners' knowledge, track their progress, and provide personalized feedback.

Using questions and learner assessments in Sana can:

  • Enhance learner engagement: Interactive questions make learning more engaging and fun

  • Improve knowledge retention: Timed assessments and question variations can challenge learners and improve their knowledge retention

What are Questions and Assessments?

  1. Create single/multiple-choice questions (single select or all that apply), match-the-pair, or true/false questions.

  2. Set timed assessments to control the testing scenarios

  3. Generate question variations to enhance learner engagement and knowledge retention

Cards

To create Questions and Learner assessments in Sana, follow these steps:

  1. Select Add card in the bottom left

  2. Select the Question card

  3. From the drop-down menu, select your question type

    1. Select all that apply (multiple-choice)

    2. Pick the best option (single-select)

    3. True or false

    4. Match the pairs

Blocks

You can add a new Question block to a page card by typing on a new line with a forward slash '/'.

šŸ’” Page cards allow you to add any type of block, whilst other cards have limitations on what you can add. Only Page cards allow you to add '/question' blocks.

How to set up your question

While in the course editor:

  1. Add your question card or block

  2. Write your question

  3. Use the drop down and choose:

    1. Select all that apply (Multiple-choice question)

    2. Pick the best option (Single-select question)

    3. True or false

    4. Match the pairs

  4. Write the answers and select the 'Correct' drop-down for the right answers

  5. Select Add option to give the learner more answers to choose from

  6. Add explanation to give more context on why an answer is right or wrong

  7. Add variation so the learner is presented with a different question if they need to test their knowledge again.

Additional settings:

Selecting the cog icon at the top of the question card or block presents additional options:

  1. Include in tests: This option only appears if placement tests or personalized reviews are turned on. Choose if you would like to include questions in these tests.

Assessment card

Assessments are essential tools in the learning and development process, serving as a measure of an individual's knowledge, skills, and abilities in a particular area.

They provide valuable feedback, enabling tailored learning experiences and targeted upskilling efforts. Whether it's a formal examination, a practical skill test, or an informal self-assessment, these tools play a crucial role in facilitating effective learning and growth.

Create an Assessment

While in the course editor:

  1. Add the Assessment card

  2. Write your question

  3. Use the drop-down and choose:

    1. Select all that apply (Multiple-choice question)

    2. Pick the best option (Single-select question)

    3. True or false

    4. Match the pairs

  4. Write the answers and select the 'Correct' drop-down for the right answers

  5. Select Add option to give the learner more answers to choose from

  6. Add explanation to give more context on why an answer is right or wrong

  7. Add variation so the learner is presented with a different question if they need to test their knowledge again.

  8. Add next question

  9. Configure the assessment parameters (see below)

šŸ’” Assessments can only be added as cards and can only be placed outside of modules

Configuring assessment parameters

Once you have added all the questions, you should consider configuring the parameters of the assessment.

Simply click the cog icon at the top of the page.

From this assessment card configuration menu ,you can set the following:

  • Passing criteria allows you to choose the % of correct answers required to pass

  • Hide correct answers prevents the correct answers from displaying if a learner gets a question wrong

Navigating between questions in assessments

To optimize the learning experience, learners can navigate back and forth between questions within the assessment.

This enables learners to browse through questions, gaining an overview of the assessment, and also allows them to revisit questions they are unsure about, especially beneficial in larger assessments.

How does it work?

  • Navigation arrows: At the top of the assessment cards, learners will find back and forth arrows. These can be used to navigate to the previous or next question, regardless of whether the current question has been answered

  • Answer submission: Once a learner submits an answer to a question, it cannot be changed. However, learners can still view their submitted answers

  • Completing the assessment: After answering all questions, learners must click ā€˜Submit Assessmentā€™ to submit their entire assessment for grading, irrespective of their position within the question sequence

Revisit assessments

Learning doesn't stop when you hit submit. Learners can review their assessment responses right after finishing - whether they pass, fail, or run out of attempts. When correct answers are hidden, learners can still see their own responses and think about their progress. This cuts confusion and turns every assessment into a chance to learn.

Important note: If you have chosen to hide the correct responses during the assessment, you can choose to have them be visible after the assessment has been successfully completed by the learner. In the assessment settings, if 'hide correct answers' is toggled on, you will have the option to choose to toggle on showing the correct answers after successful completion.

Additional info: Variations and AI generation

Varying the questions in a course is a great way of helping learners stay engaged and retain new knowledge, instead of simply memorizing answers. After writing or generating a question, you can write up to 10 variations for each multiple-choice question, or let Sanaā€™s AI generate them for you.

Hereā€™s how it works:

  • Add variation: After writing or generating a question, choose Add variation at the bottom of the question. This creates a new empty question variation for you to fill out.

  • Generate variation: To let Sana suggest a variation, navigate to the new variation and simply select Generate.

  • Refine and approve: You can edit and refine any question. Cycle through the questions and delete the questions you donā€™t need.

Variations will be cycled through randomly for the learner, so that they donā€™t repeat the same questions over and over again.
