What is a "Harsh braking" event and how is it detected?

A "Harsh braking" event is recorded when the tachograph notices the vehicle losing speed very quickly—more than 8 km/h in 3 seconds in a row. That sudden, sharp drop in speed is exactly what the event is meant to flag.

What each harsh braking event shows

Every harsh braking event lists:

Column

What it shows

Event date

When the harsh braking happened

Start speed

The vehicle's speed, in km/h, right before it started braking hard

End speed

The vehicle's speed, in km/h, once the harsh braking ended

Because Start speed and End speed sit side by side, you can see exactly how much speed the vehicle lost in that moment, without working it out yourself.

How Tachogram detects a harsh braking event

A harsh braking event is worked out from detailed speed data that the tachograph can record while the vehicle is being driven.

EU tachograph regulation does not require this data to be included when a vehicle's file is downloaded, so many uploaded files simply do not contain it.

If a vehicle's uploaded file does not include this detailed speed data, Tachogram has nothing to check for harsh braking in, and the "Harsh braking" page tells you this directly instead of just showing an empty table.
