WTD stands for Working Time Directive.
It's a set of labor-law rules that limit how long mobile workers, such as drivers, can work.
These rules are separate from the driving and rest time rules you may already know from the tachograph regulation, because working time covers more than just driving.
When you upload your activity data, the platform automatically checks it against the working time rules. It calculates any working time infringements alongside the standard tachograph infringements, so you get a complete picture of compliance in one place.
What's the difference?
The platform checks your data against two separate rule sets. Here's how they differ.
Driving and rest time rules
These rules come from a regulation: Regulation (EC) 561/2006.
A regulation applies the same way in every EU country. It sets limits on driving time and required rest periods, and these limits don't change from country to country.
These rules cover things like:
How long a driver can drive without a break
The maximum driving time allowed per day and per week
The minimum rest time needed each day and each week
Because this comes from a regulation, the platform applies the same limits no matter which EU country the driver is in.
Working time rules
These rules come from a directive: Directive 2002/15/EC, related to Directive 2003/88/EC.
A directive works differently from a regulation. Instead of applying uniformly, each country turns it into its own national law. This means the exact working time limits can vary depending on the country.
Working time covers more than just driving. It also includes other tasks the driver carries out, such as loading, unloading, cleaning, and maintenance.
These rules cover things like:
The maximum number of hours a driver can work per week
Limits on night work
Required breaks during working hours
Because this comes from a directive, the platform applies the specific national rules that match where the driver operates.
Staying compliant
Because working time limits can differ by country, it's important to check the rules that apply to where your drivers operate.
Our Tachogram platform handles this for you: it automatically applies the right working time rules alongside the driving and rest time rules, and flags any infringements from either rule set.
