Follow our guide to set up automatic birthday wishes for your contacts:
1. Create contact attribute
To wish our contacts a happy birthday, we first need to create an attribute to store the date.
1. To do this, navigate to the contact attributes settings:
2. Now create a new contact attribute with the name Date of birth, with the data type Date:
2. Request date of birth
Collect your customers' dates of birth. There are various ways to do this:
You already have the data and import it.
You create an automation that automatically asks for the data.
You ask for the date of birth in the chat and enter it manually:

3. Create birthday wishes template
Create a new WhatsApp template. To do this, go to Settings, click on Templates on the left, then on WhatsApp templates and then on New template.
2. Click Create your own template.
3. Create your birthday wish text. Ideally, you should also include a birthday discount code to encourage your customers to shop with you. To do this, add a button and then select Call-To-Action.
4. Enter the button text, the website URL to which you want to link and submit the template for review.
5. Press Submit one last time to request verification.
4. Creating the Automation
Last but not least, we now need to create the automation that sends a message to your contacts on their birthday.
1. Click on Automations and then on New automation.
2. Change the name of the automation. This will make it easier for you to find it again in the future. Then click on Add trigger.
3. Choose the trigger Date & time.
4. Select the contact attribute Date of birth on the right, which we created in step 1. Now select the time at which the birthday message should be sent and activate the Annual repetition.
5. To set up the next step of the automation, press and hold the circle in the bottom right field, drag the mouse to the right and release.
6. Choose Send WhatsApp Template.
7. Choose the WhatsApp template we created in step 3.
8. Click on Publish in the top right.
9. Now the last step: Press Publish one last time.
10. Great 🎉 The automation is ready and your contacts will receive an automatic message on their birthday every year.
